Reminder: no training on Mon. Feb. 20!!

Since there seems to be a little confusion, there is NO training on Monday, February 20!

The Wednesday, Feb. 22 morning training is in place of the usual Monday training because Monday, February 20 is President’s Day and the museum is completely closed.

Happy President’s Day!

Hello Fellow Docents

An excellent place to look for artist biographies is AskArt on Fridays!

The rest of the week, the artist biography is a "subscription-only"
feature but on Fridays, it is free for the public including
hyperactive docents!

Check it out

URGENT: Docent Needed for Tour: Wednesday, February 22 at 11 am

Can anyone do a general museum tour on Wednesday, February 22 at 11 am? Margaret Upshaw will also be leading the group.

The tour is for a group of 47 people (college students and instructors) from British Columbia, and 2 docents would be ideal. Please note that we have training on that morning from 10:30-12:30.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

Thanks for your time!

Using Computers at TAM

I just wanted to clear up some questions about using computers at Tacoma Art Museum.

Docents, and other volunteers, are not able to logon to computers on the Admin Level of the museum. If you want to use a computer, please use the ones in the Art Resource Center – they have full internet access and many other commonly used programs (such as Word). I know that in the past, a staff member may have logged on to a computer in order to let volunteers use it, but this is a very unsafe practice for us at the museum.

If you have a real need to use the computers at the Docent Desk on the Admin Level, please let me know and we will try to work something out.

Thanks for your time!

NEW book check-out and Docent Desk rearrangement

The next time you visit the Docent Desk on the Admin Level, you will notice some changes.

  1. Tacoma Art Museum recently purchased some new computers, and all of our old computers are hanging out at the Docent Desk for a short while until they move on again. Books in the overhead shelves are still there, but some other books and binders and files that were on the desk are now located on a bookshelf near the lunch room door. That’s where you will find the Log Binders, docent handouts and books related to our current exhibitions.

  1. From now on, you will be able to check out books that are located at the Docent Desk!
At the very front of the Docent Log Binder, I have added some pages with instructions on how to check out books, and some record sheets where you will write your name and phone number or email, as well as the book’s title and author, the date on which you borrowed the book, and the day on which you expect to return the book. In this way, if someone has a book that you want, you can wait until it is returned or you can call the person and arrange something between yourselves.
This system is obviously an honor system, so please be honorable!

Thanks for your time!

Art Access Pass volunteers needed

I know that many of you won’t be able to do this due to jobs and other commitments, but hopefully one or two of you will be available!

Heide.

I am looking for volunteers to help with the Tacoma Art Museum’s Art Access Pass program at Pierce County libraries. Art Access Pass is a free, family pass that library card holders can check out from their local library. To promote the pass, we do some small, 1 ½ hour workshops at some of the participating libraries – the workshop is a little bit of advertising for Tacoma Art Museum and the current exhibitions, classes and other events, plus an art-making activity related to one of our current exhibitions.

This is the Art Access Pass activity for Winter/Spring 2006 – it is taken from an activity in the Open Art Studio:

THE GREAT AMERICAN THING: MODERN ART AND NATIONAL IDENTITY, 1915 - 1935

February – May 2006

Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, participants in this workshop will create lush, pastel still-lifes of flowers from direct observation, while exploring composition, shape and color. The goal is to imitate the subtle beauty of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings by magnifying flower imagery and simplifying the details until the flowers fill the entire picture.

Ages 6 and over. 1 ½ hour art making activity.

Art Access Pass volunteers generally work on their own at the libraries, but I am available for a one-on-one meeting, as well as to help with your first presentation or you can accompany another volunteer before venturing out on your own. Information about all aspects of the Art Access Pass presentation will be provided.

I am still in need of an Art Access Pass volunteer for the following dates:

  • Saturday, February 18 from 10:30am-12:00 noon at the Tacoma Wheelock Library (to assist another volunteer, no training needed) (this would also be a good one to attend in order to learn what Art Access Pass is all about!)
  • Wednesday, February 22 from 1:00-2:30 pm at the Buckley Library
  • Wednesday, March 15 from 4:00-5:30 pm at the Sumner Library
  • Saturday, May 13 from 11am-4pm at the Yelm Timberland Library – This is an all-day drop-in activity that is in conjunction with Yelm Days. I need a few volunteers so that we can cover this event in shifts, possibly with two volunteers at a time.

Please let me know if you interested in volunteering for Art Access Pass!

guerilla advertising for TAM

Here at Tacoma Art Museum, we do something called “guerilla advertising” where we try to get as much advertising as possible out in the community, with as little money as possible. What this means is that staff and other people can take TAM brochures to any place they frequent, such as your favorite coffee shop, hair salon, bookstore, school campus, workplace, etc.

If you are interested in doing some guerilla marketing for TAM, please pick up a pack of TAM brochures for The Great American Thing at the Docent Desk on the Admin Level the next time you are at the museum. Packs of 20 brochures, in elastics, will be available in an obvious place on the Docent Desk.

Orville Cox

Note from Cass:

In the Ansel Adams photo of Georgia O'Keeffe -- Orville Cox was the wrangler at Ghost Range and the guide on a several week trip taken by O'Keefe, Adams and others.  One interesting point of the photo is that it was taken with a 35 mm camera.

Cass

more info about the photo:

"Adams and O'Keeffe On The Road" was on exhibition from September 29 to January 12, 2003 at Fitchburg Art Museum, Merriam Parkway, Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

www.fitchburgartmuseum.org

http://photography.cicada.com/exhibitions/20020929adamsokeefe.html

FITCHBURG - In September, 1937, David Hunter McAlpin organized a month-long camping trip throughout the Southwest with his friends Georgia O'Keeffe and photographer Ansel Adams. The result of this camping trip, a unique and rare set of photographic proofs made by Adams and later given to his friend McAlpin, have recently been discovered. They will be on exhibition this fall at Fitchburg Art Museum. Most have never been seen before.

The group included McAlpin's cousins, Godfrey and Helen Rockefeller, and Ghost Ranch head wrangler Orville Cox, who would be an interpreter and guide. Adams brought three cameras, two view cameras and a 35mm Contax. O'Keeffe filled a station wagon with painting supplies. The group was delayed for two weeks in Abiquiu, at the Ghost Ranch while O'Keeffe finished some work. Then they hit the road.

"Everyone knows the classic Adams photos of highly shadowed desert landscapes. O'Keeffe's fascination with the light, landforms, and artifacts of the Southwest is also noted," says Curator of the Exhibition Stephen Jareckie. "These proofs show that landscape - stark, isolated, magnificent - just as these two artists saw it. For us to see these pictures, the majority of which have never been exhibited before, is to glimpse a place that was crucial and inspirational to two major American artists."

"What's important about these photographs is both documentary and artistic. These are real Adams pictures. Though they're casual, and were clearly done on the spot, they still retain Adams's customary pictorial structure," says Jareckie. "But these aren't just landscape pictures. There are also numerous snapshots of the camping group, which include revealing portraits of Georgia O'Keeffe that have not been published."

One O'Keeffe photograph shows her with black headcovering, smiling enthusiastically at Adams. She is wearing the plain wardrobe of her later years, but her expression is youthful and delighted. Another photograph shows her sitting in front of an oxbow of the Goosenecks, a remarkably deep and convoluted gorge in Utah on the San Juan River. She wears loafers, long pants, a black short-sleeved shirt and a broad-brimmed hat. Her back is to the viewer, and there's a sketch pad open on her knee. There are group shots of the travelling party, looking rested and relaxed, and a photograph of O'Keeffe and Orville Cox. Though Adams doesn't appear in any of the pictures (he was wielding the camera), occasionally his shadow can be seen.

Among Adams' subjects are views of Pedernal Mountain, O'Keeffe's favorite peak in northeast New Mexico, Silverton, Colorado, and the Canyon de Chelly with its ancient ruins. The group also visited Pueblo settlements, Monument Valley, and the Grand Canyon.

"These are the proofs that Adams gave to David McAlpin after the trip," explains Jareckie. "These pictures have a freshness and clarity and all the pictorial impact you'd expect from Adams. Something like this is very special. I've never put together an exhibition of Adams' proofs before and I found that, though they are proofs, these pictures really sing, and would stand up in any Adams exhibition." A number of signed, finished prints (from private collectors) will be shown for comparison with proofs in the installation. The 75 or so proof prints in the exhibition are lent by the estate of Sarah Sage McAlpin.

After the death of Sarah Sage McAlpin in 2001 her heirs discovered a box containing nearly 300 small-format prints of photographs by Ansel Adams taken on this trip. Some of the images were probably as close as Adams came to taking "snapshots," but those displayed here are carefully prepared "proofs." In a number of cases Adams went on to make larger-format photographs of the same or slightly-altered views. The Ansel Adams Foundation has contact-sheets and negatives for many, if not all of these images, but in most cases these smaller images appear to be the only prints of these photos ever made by Adams himself. This exhibit marks the first time they have been on view for the public. Some of the proofs have Godfrey Rockefeller's initials on the back. It's assumed that after McAlpin received the gift, he showed it to his cousin, and asked him to mark which photos he liked.

David Hunter McAlpin was a friend and benefactor to artists, including photographers Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter. He supported photography at numerous museums and institutions, including the Museum of Modern art. He also funded the first chair in the History of Photography at his alma mater, Princeton University.

"Adams and O'Keeffe On The Road" is on exhibition from September 29 to January 12, 2003.

FW: TAM building opens 1 hour before front doors

Please note that if you come to the museum early, before open hours, you won’t be allowed in the galleries until the front doors also open. The Art Resource Center also won’t be open until the ARC volunteer arrives. So you would be limited to reading at the docent desk.

In response to a docent’s question, the museum building is generally open an hour before the museum’s front doors open. This means that you can enter the museum through the security entrance at 9 am on Saturdays, and 11 am on Sundays if you want to do some reading or something else before your docent shift.

In addition to attending the next training, I would also like to know which day you will be attending (Feb. 15 pm or Feb. 22 am), to ensure that the group is split more or less in half so that we can get through all the (10-minute) GAT artist presentations. We currently have 27 docents, so it would be nice to have 14 people presenting at each training.

Please email me which session you will attend: Wednesday, February 15 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm or Wednesday, February 22 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm.
