usted habla espanol?

Do any of you (the docents) speak Spanish fluently enough that you would be comfortable giving Spanish tours of the upcoming Frida Kahlo: Images of an Icon photography exhibition in the spring?

Upcoming Training for Chihuly Docents: Sept. 19, 6-8 pm

The next training session for Chihuly Walking Tour docents is on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 from 6-8 pm. It will consist of a lecture by Bonnie Gallagher from Union Station. Bonnie is Tacoma’s local Chihuly expert and has very close ties to Chihuly Studios. She will be giving an informal lecture with slides and/or video, and will be including information about the history of Union Station, Hilltop Glass Artists, other Chihuly collections around the country, and what’s coming next for Dale Chihuly’s work. She is a wealth of Chihuly information!

This training is required for all Chihuly Walking Tour docents, and highly recommended for all other docents.

Other Chihuly News:

New $15 Price

Please note that the price for a Chihuly Walking Tour is $15 per person, weekdays and weekends. Even though Union Station is closed on weekends, we feel that there is still plenty of Chihuly glass to see on the tour, and the price will be the same on all days. Please do try to take your weekend tours to the UW Library chandelier if possible, but the UW Library will be closed on weekends until September 25, 2006.

Stay Updated with www.chihuly.com

The Chihuly website updates exhibition information once a week. Please make sure that you look at this information periodically so that you are informed about major Chihuly exhibitions and installations that are happening around the world.

The BIOGRAPHY section of the site also has a HUGE amount of information about Dale Chihuly if you ever need new material.

Meet Bonnie at Union Station

When you visit Union Station with your tour groups, use Bonnie Gallagher as a resource. She has a humongous wealth of knowledge about Dale Chihuly and his art. She is always open to talking to tour groups and answering their questions or helping you out in any other way that you might need.

If you haven’t already read the Chihuly Cell Phone Tour transcript, you can find it at the docent desk and I recommend it!

Thanks for your time!

Frida reading

The biography of Frida Kahlo that was mentioned in last week’s training was “Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo” by Hayden Herrera. It is commonly available at second-hand bookstores.

And this isn’t required reading, but it’s certainly recommended if you want to get ahead of the game.

Thanks for your time!

Subject: Aminah labels and reminders

The exhibition catalogs for Symphonic Poem: Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson are now for sale in the TAM store for $??.

There are also two copies of the catalog at the Docent Desk – please refrain from checking them out and taking them home for the first month of the exhibition. And even when you do check out (from the Docent Desk) a catalog for a current exhibition, please try to do so on days where you can return it within a week.  Thank YOU!

The labels for Aminah are also attached to this email – these are the labels that were written by the Columbus Museum of Art. There won’t be many changes to these labels for our exhibition, but there will be slightly less art on view due to the size limitations of our gallery. Consider this “advance reading” for the exhibition since they are not final labels for Tacoma Art Museum – but any changes will be minimal. Also, before you print, please note that the “extended labels 6.19.06.doc” file is 20 pages long.

See you at the upcoming Aminah training sessions:

  • INTRO: Thursday, September 14, 2006 6-8 pm
Guest curator Barbara Johns will introduce Symphonic Poem: Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson
    Location: Event Space
  • WORKSHOP AND GALLERY TALK: Friday, September 15, 2006 10-11am
Gallery talk and workshop with Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson and curator Carole Miller Genshaft
    Location: Annette Weyerhaeuser Gallery

IMPORTANT: Sept. 12 training cancelled

We have decided to CANCEL this evening’s training which was scheduled for Tuesday, September 12 at 6 pm.

The reason for this is that we want to attract a few more new docents before we start the training for new docents, and we feel that we are a little rushed right now.

Training for new docents will start on Tuesday, September 19 at 6 pm, and this will be a lecture by Bonnie Gallagher from Union Station.

Other upcoming training:

·        Thurs. Sept. 14, 6-8 pm – Intro to Symphonic Poem: Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson by guest curator Barbara Johns.

·        Fri. Sept. 15, 10-11 am – Walk-through and Workshop with Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson and curator Carole Miller Genschaft.

Thanks for your time!
