Thursday, August 26, 7:05 Tacoma Rainiers versus those hated Portland Beavers

Subject: Uncle Charlie and the Three-Run Jack

Thursday, August 26, 7:05 versus those hated Portland Beavers, and we provide all the hotdogs, soda, ice cream and beer (don't bust my chops over the suds). It just sells itself doesn't it?

Never in Tacoma Rainiers history can it be more true to say that the players you see today will be stars for the Mariners tomorrow. No, literally tomorrow! With the hometown nine putting on a nightly show of pitching and the long ball, those gents to the north aint got nothin' on our squad. Heck, traffic has increased to and from Seattle by 13% in the last two months just due to the pitching staff alone. So why go and spend $50 at Safeco when you can spend $5 at Cheney and maybe see a Reindeer dance on the dugout?

Join us. Staff is free. Family, volunteers, or anyone else you can find is only $5.

I need to get a firm count by Thursday, August 12 so I can order tickets.

Harry Musselman's Solo Art Show

If you are in the Capitol Hill area, stop by Joe Bar (right across
from Harvard Exit cinema) and check out Harry's watercolors ... he
draws nature scenes - flowing fields and trees - brilliant colors and
serene scenes.

clarification

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to add a clarification to my last email. The certificate program is not an additional program. Rather, it is a certification for the docent training you are already doing. The only difference is that you pay a fee to the University and I have to certify with the University that you have attended at least 80% of the sessions. The calendar I sent you last week stands as is whether or not you decide to go with the certificate.

I know this is all a little confusing so please ask if you have additional questions so I can clarify for everyone.

Thanks

Tara

UWT certificate

Hi Everyone,

You may remember that a couple of months ago I told you that the museum was applying to the University of Washington Tacoma Key Bank Professional Development Center to have the docent program registered as a non-credit certificate. We just found out that this has been approved!

The program will be required for new docents but is optional for active docents. All training and program activities will take place at Tacoma Art Museum, facilitated by me along with Rock, Patricia, and other guest instructors, as previously planned (per the calendar I sent you out last week). The program will award 4.2 CEUs, or Continuing Education Units. Each CEU is worth 10 contact hours. CEUs are awarded for training time only, not for touring or for independent study.

If you are interested in this, please fill out the form I emailed to you and return it to me. I need to sign it to verify that you are an active docent. You then need to return the form with a $30 fee to UWT. This fee is substantially discounted for us; they usually charge $30 per CEU (or $108 in this case), but have lowered the fee to $30 for the entire program.

At the end of the docent training year (June), I submit a list to UWT of who has completed the program, and the participants are then awarded a certificate from the U.

A few things to note:

First, certificates cannot be awarded retroactively. If you want to get the certificate this academic year you need to register by the beginning of the training year (i.e. before August 25th).

Second, you need to attend 80% of the training or you become ineligible for the certificate even if you have registered for it. Of course, I don’t imagine this would be a problem since attendance at training is required anyway. For some of the sessions we can provide make-up opportunities, but that won’t be possible in all cases.

Also, it will be important for you to sign in at training, since I will use that sign in sheet as the basis for my official attendance record that I pass on to the U.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I think this is a really exciting opportunity for us to partner with the University, and for you all to earn some much-deserved official recognition from the University. The director of the Professional Development Center as well as the Dean of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and the Vice Chancellor of the University were all very supportive of our application to the program. I hope many of you will take advantage of this!

second docent requested for tour

Hi All,

We have a group coming in on Saturday, August 14, at
1:00 p.m. Barbara Reisman will be here on her shift but I am wondering if someone can split the group with her, since it’s on the large side at 30 people. Please let me know if you would like to come in to take half this group. I know some of you who haven’t had a lot of private tour experience were interested in having more opportunities to work with pre-scheduled groups, so this is your chance!

Thanks

Tara

article re Ilya Kabakov

Hi Everyone,

FYI, here is the link to an article in yesterday’s New York Times article about Ilya Kabakov. (You may be required to register with the New York Times if you’re not already, but it’s free, easy to do, and definitely worthwhile.)

August Docent Coffee = Third Thursday = 8/19/04

Hello Fellow Docents,

A gentle reminder that this month's Third Thursday coffee will be at
the same place (UW Tacoma Starbucks), same time (5:00pm), with the
same "no agenda" and same "no RSVP required" policy as the last few
times !

Day: Third Thursday
Date : 8/19/04
Place : UW Tacoma Starbucks
Time: 5:00pm +

The museums will be open free and late; the galleries will be open; we
can take the train to the theater district. No agenda is good freedom.

Hope you are all enjoying the summer - the days are longer; the sun is
out; hope to see you there; bring a friend.
