TAM Docents: Updates and Reminders

Hello Docents-

I wanted to let you know about a change that will, hopefully, be positive. I will be taking over the docent scheduling again for group tours as Allison has had a change in her role here at the museum (she is now the Museum Educator and we are hiring a half-time Education Assistant). Therefore, all communications will now come from me again which should simplify that process on your end.

Secondly, I wanted to remind you all about the Docent Log Book at the docent desk. I have a couple of faithful loggers but the majority of you are not participating. While I don’t think it is necessary if the day is so slow that there is nothing to report, I think it would be great to have you remark on tours. I have also been told by docents, at different times, that it is helpful to have suggestions and observations included in your log entries that may be useful for future tours and visitor interactions. Please read and write in the log.

I hope that all is going well with you. Please keep letting me know what sorts of things are working for trainings, tours, etc, and what isn’t. I know that we are still working things out with the new building scheduling requirements and that the current solution is not optimal. You have shown remarkable patience and I appreciate your willingness to make it work as much as possible. I truly appreciate all that you do and your continued enthusiasm as docents.

Finally, I am finding the shelves up at the docent desk a bit confusing with so many binders that look the same. I am planning to remove some of the older binders with archive material downstairs to the admin level. If you have any strong feelings about their removal, please let me know. I would like to restrict the binders to just the current exhibitions, upcoming exhibitions, and log book.

Thanks again,

-Jana

Hello Docents-

Attached are some training materials for the upcoming exhibition The Secret Language of Animals. I will get those copied and up in the docent binder today. Please note that the checklist is not FINAL but I wanted you to have something to get you started.

Thank you for all that you do for Tacoma Art Museum!

Urgent, 2 tours coming right up!

Hello Docents,

I apologize for sending you more than one email today, I promise this will be the last.  It has just come to my attention that there are two more tour inquiriess, both much sooner, that will need docents.

The first is a Chihuly Walking Tour that will be taking place 2:30 pm on this coming Saturday, January 16 for some visitors from the Columbia Art Museum in South Carolina.

The second is a museum overview tour that will have a focus on religion and social justice in art (we can discuss this one in greater depth if you are free to lead this tour).  This tour will begin at 1 pm on Wednesday, January 20, a week from tomorrow.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  I really appreciate all that you do for Tacoma Art Museum!

Best,

Allison

Tacoma Art Museum Docents

Happy 2010!

Wishing you all a happy and healthy new year.  I hope to see many of your faces at our exhibition opening in a few weeks.  It should be a festive occasion and fun for all ages.   I am also happy to report we have many inquiries for group tours at the museum in the coming months.  I have listed them below.  Please take a look at this list and let me know if you will be available on any of these dates.

January-

A group of 10-12 ladies with AAUW Palette to Palate group would like a tour of Concise History on Wednesday, January 27 at 10:30 am.

February-

A group of 25 adult artists from Pacific Northwest Art School on Whidbey Island would like a tour of the Movement of Impressionism on Thursday, February 25 at 11 am.

March-

I am still looking for 3 docents to give tours on March 13 at 12:30 and 1:45 pm for a large group of Japanese students from Mukogawa University in Spokane.  The contact for this tour has requested that the docents speak slowly, enunciate clearly and share basic exhibition overviews with these groups.

I will need 2 docents for a Chihuly Walking tour on March 16, 2010 at 10:45 am.  This tour will have between 32 and 52 participants.

I will need another 3 docents to lead the same group from Mukogawa, for different students, on Saturday, March 20, again at 12:30 and 1:45 pm.

April-

A group of 22 people from the Art Institute of Chicago would like a tour of museum highlights on Wednesday, April 21, at 11:45 am.

Thank you for all you do for Tacoma Art Museum!  I look forward to seeing you soon!
