TAM: Answer to another question: Book of Mark end of Chapter 1

Thanks to Elizabeth Walsh who forwarded this question to Tim Ternes:

Several people have asked who is pictured at the end of Chapter 1 of the
Gospel of Mark in the margin. Is it Saint Mark?

The little monk in the margin is simply that; a monk reading and
pondering scripture. No one in particular, just a reference to the
tradition of scriptural study.

Greetings, Elizabeth.

I hope the tours continue to do well. I have to admit at being a bit
jealous of your touring; sharing the works with guests is one of my
favorite
things to do, and I do not get to do it enough these days.

The little monk in the margin is simply that; a monk reading and
pondering
scripture. No one in particular, just a reference to the tradition of
scriptural study.

Thank you for all of your questions.

Regards and happy touring,

Tim

Simple question, but a few have asked.

TAM: Saint John's Bible reminder

Now that we are a little over halfway through The Saint John’s Bible exhibition, I just want to remind you to make sure your information is always fresh and correct. Please consider re-reading the Media Fact Sheet, FAQ, and the Smithsonian article on the project. (All are attached but have been sent previously.) I bring this up simply because this exhibition is so vast and full of little facts.

During the training with Tim Ternes, he recommended that re-reading the Smithsonian article before each tour or shift was one of the best ways to prepare.

And don’t be afraid to tell visitors that you don’t know the answer to a question. You can send visitors with difficult, unusual, or simply unanswered questions to the Art Resource Center. Visitor Services is also a good resource if you are in the galleries since they are very familiar with all the “frequently asked questions” by now. It is perfectly acceptable to tell visitors you don’t know an answer (and much more desirable than fudging it), but do offer to help them find the answer or offer them resources that hold the answer. The Saint John’s Bible websites are www.saintjohnsbible.org and  www.loc.gov/exhibits/stjohnsbible. And if you are guestimating an answer, just be honest and let your audience know that your memory is a little foggy.

Thanks for all your hard work!

Dear Docents,

In the fall of 2008, Tacoma Art Museum will be showing an exhibition by Don Fels.

A copy of the catalog is at the docent bookshelf.

What is a Trade? Donald Fels and Signboard Painters of South India
September 13 – December 14, 2008

Northwest artist Donald Fels has been creating work around the connections between trade and culture for over a decade. For this project, Fels took as his conceptual starting point the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama’s voyages to India as a spice trader. Fels commissioned sign painters in India to collaborate with him to create thirteen large enamel-on-metal panels that examine the legacy of trade in India and how trade impacts cultures and populations beyond the simple exchange of goods.

This exhibition will be on view in Spokane from May 2 – June 29, 2008:

http://www.northwestmuseum.org/northwestmuseum/sub.aspx?id=2643

I do have a copy of the exhibition labels from the Spokane show—our labels will be slightly different. If you would like a copy of the Spokane labels, please let me know and I will email them to you individually.

Lastly, please refrain from buying the Don Fels catalog for now – I will give you more details in July.

Thanks for your time!

Please try to attend, and bring your friends – it promises to be very interesting talk.

Optional

Second Tuesday: Suzanne Moore
