TAM Docents: Come Support Zoe on April 28!

Hello Docents-

If the font below appears really big, it’s because it is. I am inviting you to come support Zoe by attending this presentation, if you are available. I had the pleasure of seeing an abridged version of this talk and it was very good. She is planning to add more stories for this public presentation so it will likely be even better! It is Zoe. Enough said.

Curatorial Adventures
in Japan

Thursday, April 28, 1 pm

Zoe Donnell, curator of the recent exhibition Edo to Tacoma: Japanese Woodblock Prints from the Collection, speaks about her experiences as part of the 2011 Japan-US Curatorial Exchange Program last month. For this exchange, sponsored by the Japan Foundation, Donnell travelled with ten other American curators on a two-week tour of museums throughout Japan—a tour that happened to coincide with the calamitous March earthquakes and tsunami. She will share pictures, stories, and thoughts about the people, places, and art she encountered during this life-altering trip, including what makes museums in Japan unique and what similarities they share with museums everywhere.
Free with museum admission.

Thank you,

-Jana

TAM Docents: Scheduled Chihuly Public Tours

Hello Docents-

I know this may sound soon but we are often “ahead of ourselves” where marketing is concerned. I feel that the public docent tours have been a big hit so far and I would like to continue with our roll by scheduling some set tours of Dale Chihuly’s Northwest, Chihuly: Gifts from the Artist, and Chihuly Walking Tours in a similar fashion. Before I dive in and do so, I want you to have the option to tell me, “no way because…” in case there issues or concerns I am so far, blissfully, unaware of. You get through the end of the week to educate me, bow out, or otherwise agree wholeheartedly to give unlimited tours. Then I will proceed to schedule tours based on your already scheduled docent shifts. If you know you will be gone during the run of Dale Chihuly’s Northwest please get those dates to me as soon as you can so that I don’t schedule a tour for you. If I forget or screw something up, my bad, I will plan to give the tour (I think you are all better at giving tours so I will try not to screw up!)

I really appreciate all that you do and I keep hearing what a bang up job you are all doing on the Rockwell tours. Thanks so much for being such a great group of docents!

Best regards,

-Jana

TAM Docents: Event Space Exhibition Change

Docents-

I promised I wouldn’t send any more emails yesterday but today is another day. Attached are checklist and label information for the Event Space exhibition now on view. Enjoy!

Please mark you calendars for Tuesday, June 7 as the Education Department would like to host a thank you and congratulations get-together with wine and cheese (or something along those lines) at my house in Tacoma, just 2 miles from the museum, from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. You are welcome to bring a guest and we’ll hope for some lovely weather. I do have a giant dog who is VERY friendly but if you are totally freaked out by dogs, let me know (I don’t know what I’ll do about it but I will give it some thought).

Thank you,

-Jana

Mary passed along your inquiry to me. Below is a related excerpt from the article, "Interesting People: The Man Who Painted our Cover this Month," which was published in the May 1921 issue of American Magazine (no page # available). I happened to have this information in my notes from a past exhibition.

From the time he finished art school Mr. Rockwell has drawn boys; and his barefoot, swimmin'-hole, country lads are familiar to every reader of magazines in this country. Country or small-town boys have a greater appeal than city boys, he says; for seventy per cent of a magazine's readers were at one time country boys, or small-town boys, and such pictures remind them of incidents in their childhood. Take such a homely thing as a toe tied up with a rag. See how it reminds people of childhood. "I get a great many letters about my pictures," he says, "and one of the things most frequently mentioned is that stubbed toe tied with a rag. 'It's the cutest thing in the picture, people write."

I hope this is helpful!

Sincerely,

Corry Kanzenberg

Hi Susan—

I have recently returned from maternity leave and am making my way through a litany of emails, so my apologies for not responding to this sooner. What an interesting and curious detail! I checked in with Jana Wennstrom, our Manager of Public and Volunteer Programs, as she leads our docent corps and I thought perhaps this question might have come up there, but we are both stumped. So I am sending it on to our curator Margaret Bullock. Margaret is out of the office this week, but perhaps she will have an answer on her return.

In the meanwhile, if you’ve learned anything more, we’d be interested to hear.

Cheers,

Courtney

Hello Courtney,

My name is Susan Olds- I am an art historian and educator. I present talks for the King County Library System.

In March I am presenting 5 lectures on Rockwell as a preview for your excellent exhibit opening this month.

I have one question that is more of a curiosity- in many of Rockwell's illustrations of boys, the figure frequently has a bandage wrapped around his big toe.

It is a recurring motif and I wonder if anyone at the museum is similarly puzzled. I read his autobiography and had no luck finding an answer.

Any answers out there?

Cheers,

Susan Olds

TAM Docents: Docent Training Dates

Hello Docents-

I am still trying to pin down your training dates but I have successfully wrangled 3 that I wanted to get on your calendars:

Required Training

Any time you can arrange with another docent

During the month of April, pair up with another docent and do a tour – even if it is just for the other docent (act as you would with a visitor). Assess touring technique for peer and self-evaluation. This is also your chance to let me know what you would like more training opportunities in too.

Required Training

Tuesday,  May 17,

10:30 am  - 12:30 pm

Chihuly’s Northwest Training with Rock Hushka.  Meet in the Event Space.

Required Training

Thursday, June 30,

10:30 am  - 12:30 pm

New Acquisitions Training by Margaret Bullock. This is also a public program

Required Training

Wednesday, July 6,

10:30 am  - 12:30 pm

Virna Haffer Training by Margaret Bullock. This is also a public program

I should be able to get a more complete training calendar to you later this month. Thanks for your patience. I also included the reminder about your evaluations too. When you have completed your evaluations, please put them at my desk or in my mailbox in the mailroom on Admin.

Thank you for all that you do for Tacoma Art Museum! I hope to see all of you next Tuesday at volunteer appreciation from 5 – 7 pm. We want to wine and dine you – plus, I have some really great raffle prizes!
