photography policy

Hi All,

I wanted to send along a quick explanation about the museum’s photography policy for visitors:

Visitors may not take photographs of individual works of art. They may only take architectural photographs and/or overall gallery shots that do not focus on individual works. Flash must be turned off in the building. These policies are in place for the safety of the artwork as well as to protect artists’ copyright. Visitors need to fill out a photo permit at the front desk to take any photographs in the building.

Visitor Services staff will remind people of these policies, but I wanted to make sure you all knew this as well. Please let visitors know of the policy if they are interested in taking pictures. In fact, this is a good thing to mention at the very start of the tour, as I know some of you already do, so that people can fill out the forms when they are already in the lobby rather than having to leave the tour to come back to the desk.

Occasionally there may be cases where photographs of individual works are allowed. This was true with Mille Fiori because Chihuly Studios had granted permission. Unless you hear otherwise, however, please assume that the policy stands as stated above.

Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions.

textbook

Dear Docents,

For this fall’s new docent class, we will be requiring a textbook for the art history class. Responding to Art: Form, Content, and Context is a wonderful book by art educator Robert Bersson. It comes highly recommended by colleagues in the field, and Anna and I have reviewed it and think it will be a great resource.

The first part of the book focuses on art appreciation and looking at art, with sections on each category of artistic medium (2-D, including painting, drawing, printmaking, etc., and 3-D, including sculpture, architecture, etc.). The second half of the book comprises a good art history overview from ancient Egypt to the present, with lots of high-quality full-color images. We will be ordering it through the museum store so we will be able to offer docents a substantial discount (the price will depend on how many copies we order so I can’t quote you the final price now, but imagine it will be in the $50 range).

Current docents are not required to buy the book, but I’m guessing that some of you will want to purchase it. If you think you might be interested, please let me know, since I am trying to estimate the number of copies we need to order.

If you would like to review the book before ordering I have a copy you can look at if you’d like to stop by my desk.

And lastly, we are actively recruiting people for the new docent class starting in September. If you know someone who might be interested, please either give them my contact information, or pass on to me their name/phone number and I will be happy to call them and talk to them about the program. If you belong to any organizations that you think we should add to our mailing list for docent program flyers, please let me know. Thanks to those of you who have already referred friends to us.

More on the Summer Party - July 28th

Thank you to those who replyed since yesterday...way to go!

Two items have come up repeatedly in the early responses....first A-L folks are bringing side dishes for everyone to share...like salads, beans etc. I listed this as main dishes...my mistake.

Secondly, some have asked for directions...so here they are....

Come to Gig Harbor Peninsula via highway 16....heading towards Bremerton. Take the City Center exit and turn left at the end of the exit ramp. This puts you on the road that will bring you out to my house. The road winds and changes names as it changes directions. Just stay on this road (Wollochet where you enter it) for approximately 6 miles. Once you go over Hwy 16 you will go through 4 lights...stay to the right...do not take any left turns that are turn lanes....the roadway straightens out after the last traffic light at 70th. The roads are numbered and you will see the numbering increase 84th, 85th and so on. The road naturally turns left at 92nd. Once you complete this natural turn watch for a Y turn on your right. This is 36th...go right. At the next intersection thier is a 4-way stop - turn right onto Ray Nash Drive. My house is the 5th on the left - Dark Green with white picket fence. Pass my house and park across the street in my neighbors front yard...it will be marked with a sign.

My phone number is 253-265-6087....call if you get lost. Penny

See you on the 28th! One week from Wednesday....

Fill-in needed for Wednesday night

Hi All,

I am looking for a docent to team up with Penny H. to lead a group of event planners/concierges through the museum after their meeting on Wednesday evening, July 21. We would need you from about
7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Ellen was signed up for this but unfortunately has been very ill and had to cancel.

If you are free on Wednesday night, I’d appreciate your help. This group is especially important because they are responsible for booking group tours to the museum, so impressing them now may have a big pay off later!

Please let me know.

Thanks

Tara
