This tour was for Chihuly, not Margaret Bourke-White. Sorry!

We have a potential tour or Margaret Bourke-White lined up for Wednesday, November 16 at 10 am for 54 adults. Since there is only one docent scheduled on that day (Barbara Abegg), I would like to line up 2 or 3 more docents.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

Please also give me your thoughts on what is a manageable group size for a tour? How many docents do you think we need for a group of 54 adults?

Thanks for your time!

Sense of Place update

Just wanted you to know that the final rotation of Japanese prints are now up in Sense of Place. Didn’t want you to be caught by surprise. The rotation consists of two prints and label copy is below.

Artist unknown

Monkeys in the Yoshino Mountains, 1836

Woodblock print

Gift of Mrs. James W. Lyon

This beautiful example of surimono provides a sense of place in time. Surimono were created in small numbers to note a special occasion and often incorporated elaborate and elegant printing techniques such as the metal pigments seen here. This surimono conveys a New Year’s greeting. The monkeys cavorting at the top of the waterfall symbolize the year 1836a year of the monkey in the Chinese zodiacwhile courtiers play instruments below.

Utagawa Kuninaga (Japan, died 1829)

Scene from Act VIII from Tales of the Forty-seven Samurai [Chusingura], 1810s

Woodblock print

Gift of Mrs. James W. Lyon

This depiction of Mt. Fuji represents a moment from the Tales of the Forty-seven Samurai, and reveals how the iconic mountain immediately locates the scene. Multi-colored woodblock prints developed in Japan in the second half of the 1700s, and the antiquity of this print is evident in the use of muted, natural dyes now slightly faded.

Training Update for Nov. 16 & 21

On November 16 and 21, the scheduled docent training was supposed to be related to Dale Chihuly. This has been changed to a photography lecture, and the Chihuly training will be re-scheduled for sometime in 2006.

So, on Wednesday, November 16 from 6:00 - 7:15 pm and Monday, November 21 from 10:00 - 11:15 am, we will have a training session with Jeremy Harrison, a photo editor from the Tacoma News Tribune at the Tacoma Art Museum. He is going to talk about the history of photography, including the explosion of digital photography and techniques. He will be speaking for an hour plus 10-15 minutes of questions.

Please note that the Monday training time is slightly different, 10 am instead of the usual 10:30 am.

Please let me know if this causes problems for you.

Docent Shift Available: Fridays from 1-5 pm starting on November 18

One of our docents, Karen Bell-Hanson, has decided to leave us in order to volunteer with art-making activities such as Art After School and the Open Art Studio.

As a result, her Week B Friday afternoon shift (starting November 18, every two weeks) is available to anyone who might want to change their docent shift, or to new docents who still haven’t signed up for a permanent shift. Karen will cover her last shift on Friday, November 4, and you could start as soon as Friday, November 18 from 1-5 pm.

Please reply only if you are interested, and I will follow-up with you.

Thanks for your time!

Docent Needed: Saturday, November 26 from 1-5

Can anyone do a docent shift (or trade a shift) on Saturday, November 26 from 1-5? This is on the Thanksgiving weekend. Roxanne Peterson will also be in the galleries as a docent but we do expect it to be busier than usual because of the long weekend.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

Thanks for your time!
