Modern Art History Course

In addition, to your regular training schedule I would like you to select four art history lectures to attend on Tuesdays from 6-8 pm. You may choose any 4 of the 18 sessions provided. You may attend more than 4 if you want to.

Modern Art History Schedule

Tuesdays, 6-8 pm

Fall:  October 3rd-November 7th, 2006

Winter:  January 9-February 6th, 2007

Spring: March 6th-April 3rd, 2007

FALL SESSION

The modern art history course will survey western art history from the late 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century with Ronald Fields, Professor Emeritus Art History, University of Puget Sound.  The fall session is part one of a three part, eighteen week course. Winter and spring class descriptions coming soon!

The Head and the Heart: Neoclassicism and Romanticism

Tuesday, October 2nd, 6pm

Befitting the "Age of Enlightenment" artists such as Jacques Louis David and Jean August Ingres sought to reform the visual arts by creating a "correct" style of universal validity in the mid to late eighteenth century. In contrast, artists such as Delacroix and Turner emphasized emotion and imagination over rationality and the subconscious over the conscious.

Tell it Like it is...Maybe: Realism in the 19th Century

Tuesday, October 10th, 6pm

Realism did not represent a slavish imitation of nature but rather, a democratic – even socialist art movement lead by artists such as Courbet, Millet, Eakin’s and Homer who sought to sincerely deal with subjects previously dismissed as artistically insignificant by the academy.

A Delight in Light: Impressionism

Tuesday, October 17th, 6pm

Originally misunderstood and highly criticized by the art establishment, Impressionist artists Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissaro and other French artists of the late 19th century brought a new sense of immediacy to painting by capturing the fleeting moment.

A Return to Conceptual Painting: Post Impressionism

Tuesday, October 24th, 6pm

Born of Impressionism’s formal breakthroughs in art, especially in the area of color, artists Cezanne and Seurat originated their own variants on color, light and atmosphere.

Symbolism as Expression: Paul Gauguin

Tuesday, October 31st, 6pm

Searching for the purity of feeling and spirituality, artist Paul Gauguin was a willful and independent seeker of intuitive sensations and imaginative fantasies creating invented figures and forms, and abstracted use of color and line and composition to convey mysterious mood.

Art as Autobiography: Vincent Van Gogh

Tuesday, November 7th, 6pm

The emotionally and personally expressive paintings of Vincent Van Gogh burst the traditional bounds of naturalism, impressionism, and rationality to such extent that it was noted by some at the time, that “the Dutchman painted like a mad man.”

RE: the floats are here to stay

In response to questions of if the Chihuly floats will be a permanent installation on the wave, the answer is no from what I know. They will be there for a few more months probably, but they will eventually, at some point, be removed.

Dale Chihuly Gifts Ma Chihuly’s Floats to Tacoma Art Museum

(Tacoma, WA) – Tacoma Art Museum has added Ma Chihuly’s Floats to the museum’s permanent collection. Dale Chihuly’s gift is the newest work to be added to the museum’s premier collection of Chihuly glass art.

The floats were originally installed on January 4, 2006. Soon after, Chihuly dedicated the work to his mother, Viola, who had recently passed. Ma Chihuly’s Floats features thirty-nine of his Niijima floats resting on Richard Rhodes’ Untitled – the stone wavelike sculpture in the museum’s inner courtyard.

“We’re honored that Dale has chosen to give these beautiful floats to the museum in memory of his mother,” said Director Stephanie Stebich. “From the day they were installed, they’ve enthralled our visitors. This gift significantly strengthens our collection of Dale’s work.”

As a native of Tacoma, Chihuly generously supports the arts in the region. In 1990 Chihuly presented the museum with a gift of more than thirty sculptures and drawings in honor of his father and brother. He added several more pieces in 2003 in conjunction with the new building’s opening. Today, Tacoma Art Museum features them as the premier collection of Chihuly glass on long-term public display. The collection dates back to 1977 and features examples from many of the artist’s major series including Baskets, Sea Forms, Cylinders, Macchia, Persians, and Venetians.

“I am pleased to be able to gift Ma Chihuly’s Floats to the Tacoma Art Museum in honor of my mother, Viola,” said Chihuly. “She would have really liked this installation and I’m glad that it will now join the collections at the museum that honor both my father and brother here in my hometown.”

Chihuly was inspired to create the Niijima floats after visiting friends in Niijima, an island in Tokyo Bay. These floats are reminiscent of traditional Japanese fishing floats and are among the largest free-blown forms ever created. He began the series in 1991, experimenting by using glass made from Niijima’s beach sand.

Tacoma Art Museum’s mission is to connect people through art. The museum serves the diverse communities of the region through its collection, exhibitions, and learning programs, emphasizing art and artists from the Northwest. The museum’s five galleries display an array of top national shows, the best of Northwest art, creatively themed exhibitions, and historical retrospectives. In addition, there is an Education Wing for children, adults, and seniors with an art resource center, classroom, and studio for art making. Tacoma Art Museum is located near the Museum of Glass, the Washington State History Museum, and historic Union Station.

Artists’ Talk with Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora Mace

Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora Mace have worked collaboratively for more than twenty-five years after meeting at the Pilchuck Glass School in 1979. They partnered with Chihuly on the Soft Cylinder series in the early 1980s and again on the Jerusalem Cylinder series in 1999.  Together, Kirkpatrick and Mace have created a diverse body of work that includes both blown-glass vessels and sculpture fabricated with wood, glass, and other media.
