Exhibition info galore part 3

Hello for the final time today, docents:

And here is the label text and checklist for Marie Watt. She will be presenting a lecture (required training) and workshop (recommended and fun!) on Saturday, July 21. That’s in your training calendar, but a more updated version of that document is forthcoming. Her exhibition, Marie Watt: Lodge, opens tomorrow, and it is really incredible, including many interactive elements.

We have a bunch of samples of the mixed media materials Marie uses, so as soon as we get those a little bit labeled, sorted, and catalogued, you will be able to use them as some nice hands-on samples for tours (although a lot of the stuff in this exhibition is already touchable, which is exciting).

Hope you all have a great 4th of July! I’ll be out of the office on vacation next week, but look forward to seeing you all soon.

Thanks, as always, for all you do for the museum.

Courtney

Exhibition info galore part 2

Hello again docents:

Here is the checklist and label text for Best of the Northwest: Selected Paintings from the Collection. For those who missed Margaret’s docent training/lecture/gallery tour earlier this week (which was excellent!), you can view it at http://vimeo.com/44903262. (Sorry the video is a little sideways.)

This exhibition is some of the greatest hits from TAM’s Northwest painting collection, so likely you are already pretty familiar with a lot of it. Our previous publications and upcoming (fall) handbook are great resources, and it’s also good to know that some substantial portion of our collection—with more to come—is now available online to the public at emuseum.tacomaartmuseum.org.

Cheers,

Courtney

Exhibition info galore

Hello everyone:

I am about to send you a little landslide of materials for each of our new exhibitions: label text, checklists, lecture videos if we’ve got ‘em. I will group it in several emails as I believe Jana did, to try to avoid bounce-backs.

Attached is label text and a checklist for the exhibition The Marioni Family: Radical Experimentation in Glass and Jewelry. We had a wonderful training/public program with Paul and Marina Marioni, facilitated by Rock, on June 13. (And perhaps some of you even caught the talk with Rock, the Marionis, and Dale Chihuly during our Annual Meeting this Tuesday!)

If you missed the training, please do your homework. J We’ll have a video of the June 13 program available soon on our Vimeo page (I’ll send you the direct link when it’s up), but in the meanwhile we’ve got lots of info on the Marionis in the ARC, as well as the great episode of Craft in America, “Family,” featuring the Marionis: http://video.pbs.org/video/2152205235/ (this video is also playing in the gallery). We’ll also have an audio guide up and running soon that will share some firsthand info from the artists about a few of their key pieces and some other important works in the exhibition, such as Chihuly’s first macchia.

More coming soon for Best of the Northwest and Marie Watt!

And your new docent contact is...

me!

Hello, faithful docents:

I am sharing what I hope will be welcome news: Beginning in September, I will be transitioning from my current Director of Education position into a part-time position as the Public and Docent Programs Manager. This means I will be overseeing the parts of Janas former job that dealt with developing public programs (lectures, adult workshops, etc), docent training, as well as the Gates Art Resource Center. (Megan will continue to handle those aspects dealing with general volunteer hiring and coordination, including docent scheduling for group tours.)

This allows me to spend more time with my young daughter, while remaining a part of the museum family and getting to work more closely with all of you, so I am very excited about it, and very grateful that the museum has been so supportive about the transition! Please see Stephanies email below for more about the timeline and how this affects the department as a whole. Of note is that I remain in my director role through early August, and will then be away for most of that month before returning in my new role in September. This leaves me (and the whole department) with a very busy July as I try to serve you in both roles, so please bear with me!

I know I have some big shoes to fill in the form of my predecessor, and rest assured Ill try to get some advice directly from Jana so that I can best support you all in the great work you do for the museum. I think most of you know that my background, training, and graduate degree is in museum education, including adult education, that Ive taught some docent trainings in the past and been involved in their development for the past 3 years, and that I have a huge amount of respect and appreciation for all you do, so hopefully you will feel that you remain in good hands.

Ill definitely want to meet with you all to get feedback on what has and hasnt been working and what you might want from the museum in the future, but more on that in a separate email later, since this is probably a lot to take in!

Warm regards,

Courtney

Subject: changes in Education

Dear All,

I share with you upcoming changes in the education department.

After August 4, Courtney Vowels will step down as Director of Education, and beginning the week of September 3 (following family travel during the month of August) she will assume the role of part-time Public and Docent Programs Manager. Courtney has determined she needs to adjust her work-life balance, and we support her in that effort.

I am grateful for Courtney’s 4 ½ years of service to the museum, including 3 years of leading the Education department during an exciting period. She has been an important part of the senior manager team. We are grateful Courtney will remain a part of the museum family in her new role and help with the transition in leadership.

Josh Proehl has agreed to step up as Interim Director of Education beginning Tuesday, August 7. He will shadow Courtney in relevant meetings in July and begin to take on some new responsibilities over the course of the month in order to make this shift as smooth as possible. We thank him for his willingness to take on additional administrative duties while continuing as Community Programs Manager.

We plan to share the Director of Education job shortly and ask for your recommendations for top candidates to consider.

Stephanie
