Akio Takamori

Hi there,

I am attending the Akio Takamori lecture tomorrow at Bellevue Arts Museum. Tacoma Art Museum will be showing Akio’s work in June 2006. If you would like to join me please let me know so I can look for you. I live in Seattle, so if you don’t mind taking the bus back I can offer a ride to 3 people. I can drop people off at the downtown Seattle bus stop and there is a direct line to the Tacoma Dome Station. I will be leaving TAM at 4:30 pm to make sure I am on time.

I hope you are well,

Carri

Docent Needed: Saturday, September 24 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Can anyone do a docent shift on Saturday, September 24 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm?

This is for a special event for the Hunt Club Annual Dinner, and would involve 50 people. Leslie Kinkade and Stephanie Stebich (who are employees) will also be in the galleries as docents, but we want one extra “official” docent too.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

URGENT: Docent Needed: Monday, September 19 from 3-6 pm

I need 5 or 6 docents for museum tours, as well as some Chihuly Walking Tours, on Monday, September 19 from 3 to 6 pm, possibly later since the event is not yet finalized. I would be especially interested in those of you who are both docents and Chihuly guides (you know who you are!), as well as any of the docents who might feel comfortable giving a Chihuly Walking Tour. (If you want to read up on Union Station and the Bridge of Glass before doing the tour, I can put together an info package and have it ready for you at the museum.)

This is for a group of 100 people from Tacoma Community College’s new international student program. They will also be having a buffet meal at the museum, starting at 3:00 pm.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

how often do you check email?

In an attempt to make information distribution more effective, I would like to know how often each of you check your email – daily? weekly? etc.

And do you check from home or at work? Or do you use a public computer or someone else’s computer?

Log Update

Here is the latest info about The Log, as related by Irene in Security:

Saturday, September 10:

The cutting of the log in the parking lot has begun. It was wonderful to observe the prayer over it before the first saw was started. It has been exciting to watch and see the men out there talking, measuring, chalking, and deciding where to cut. Before anything was done, a counting of the rings was done. It is approximately 460 to 500 years old. A lot of the visitors today stopped and talked with them, and took some photos of them working. It has been a great weekend to work here and observe this. It will be nice to see them work, and watch as it progresses.

Irene.

Sunday, September 11:

Well folks the log has now become two pieces. At 6 p.m. yesterday they gave the log a gentle rock, and it became two halves. I stayed to watch the process, and to be sure that it did not roll on anyone. It was a little scary watching as a person was standing on top of the log using a chainsaw cutting it in half. Doing this in the rain, I was afraid he would slip or cut himself. As I stand and look at the two pieces now it is amazing. It took 3 hours from the first cut to the last. Everyone stood around and clapped as it became two. What a great day!!

Irene.

The log is being carved by a few men, and several students (teenagers, I believe) in the parking lot. Since the men all have jobs, carving will be happening mostly on the weekends and in the evenings, and you can easily see it from the window in the hallway between the Annette B. Weyerhaeuser and Russell Galleries. And they are planning on carving two canoes from the log, one river canoe and one sound canoe.

I am compiling some information on Canoe Journeys in this area, and will be emailing you about it shortly.

CANCELLED: Wed. Sept. 14 at 7 pm: Docent Reading Group: Coast Salish Carving

I know that this is extremely short notice, but I have decided to cancel
what was supposed to be tonight's Docent Reading Group meeting.

I had asked that participants RSVP to me, and I have only had a small
handful of people respond that they cannot attend. No one has responded
that they will be attending, and so I am assuming that no one will show
up tonight. I only hope that I am correct!

I realize that the reading group has been very poorly organized for the
Coast Salish Carving and I take all the blame for that. If you are
interested in continuing this book club, please let me know so that I
can create a list of interested participants, and not bother the whole
docent group with these emails.

For those of you that are interested in the book club:
I propose that we meet on Wednesday, September 14 in the evening at 7
pm.

Information about the book is below but hopefully you already know about
that!

Please let me know whether that date and time works for you, and if you
are planning to attend. Due to the smallish number of participants, I am
hoping that we can do it as a single group.

Subject: Docent Reading Group: Coast Salish Carving

BOOK:
This summer's Docent Reading Group will be focusing on native stories
for
the Coast Salish Carving exhibition. There are not many books out there
that
focus specifically on Coast Salish stories and are in print, affordable
and
easily available, so... I would like to suggest that you are free to
read
any book on that theme that you find at your library or bookstore or
already
own. (but I do also have a recommendation...) You can read as many or as
few
stories as you want!
If you want a specific recommendation, you might want to look for
"Indian Legends of the Pacific Northwest" by Ella E. Clark.
This
book has been in publication for 50 years, and contains stories from
several
native groups around this area. I think it should be easy to find at
bookstores (I got mine at the UW bookstore) and even the library, not
too
expensive at about $16, and a good "general read" to add to
your
well-rounded bookshelf.

DATE:
Hopefully we will be able to meet sometime in Augest to discuss this
book,
but Shannon will have to let us know what date is available for that (to
be
determined).

other:
Lastly, I would like to encourage people to come to the Book Club
discussion
even if you haven't read the book. I think that you might learn
something
from the discussion (or at least find them interesting), and that you
can
still take part in the discussions, without having read the books
themselves.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me.
Heide Fernandez-Llamazares.

Docent Needed: Wednesday, September 28 from 10-11 am

Can anyone do a one-hour general museum tour on Wednesday, September 28 from 10-11 am? I currently do not have a regular docent scheduled at all for Wednesday mornings, but a tour group of 19 adults is coming on this day. If you want to stay for the whole shift (10-2), that would be good, but it’s not required. Also, if anyone wants to do a one-time shift trade in order to docent when there is a guaranteed tour, that would be great!

Please note that docent training is also scheduled for the same day (10:30 – 12:30 am, Margaret Bourke-White introduction and walk-through with Patricia), so make sure that you have attended the Wednesday evening training session (September 21, 6-8 pm) if you accept this tour.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.
