TAM Docents:Mexican Folk Art Opportunities

Hello Docents-

Thomas has been so gracious as to invite all docents to the member opening for Folk Treasures of Mexico: The Nelson A. Rockefeller Collection from the San Antonio Museum of Art on Saturday, October 29. You can also see a fellow docent give a tour of the exhibition (Sue Stibbe is very knowledgeable about Mexican folk art, being a collector herself, so consider coming to hear one of her tours at 1 pm or 2 pm). I have a breakdown of the day’s events below.

The only event I haven’t mentioned today in conjunction with this exhibition is the required training on Friday, October 28 at 10:30 am in the Murray Family Event Space.

TAM Docents: Student Rate for Know More Art Series in November

Hello Docents-

Despite my deep disappointment in not seeing more of you for today’s great lecture (you missed seeing pieces from the collection brought by Margaret that don’t typically get shown), I have received permission to offer the student rate for the Know More Art series in November.

Know More Art Lecture Series: The Rich Tradition of Mexican Folk Art
Saturdays, November 5 –19, 1 pm
Traditionally, folk art is made by people who have no formal art training and are working with their hands, simple tools, and materials that are available. Mexican Folk Art, rooted in everyday materials, was historically designed out of the desire to make fun and beautiful pieces out of utilitarian ware. In this fall lecture series, join us to learn more about the history and origins of Latin American folk art and view some excellent in-person examples in the exhibition Folk Treasures of Mexico: The Nelson A. Rockefeller Collection from the San Antonio Museum of Art. Cost: $40 for complete series ($25 for members), $15 per individual lecture ($10 for members, $5 for students). Educator clock hours available. Preregistration is recommended.

If you want to attend at the student rate, contact Megan Ristine at 253.272.4258 x3026 or you can go directly to the front desk to purchase. I hope to see you there!

TAM Docents: Dia de los Muertos

Hello Docents-

It is that time of the year again…Dia de los Muertos! I wanted to remind you that there is no formal training for Dia de los Muertos so you will need to review on your own. There is a video in the ARC and some materials in the binder at the docent desk (still there since last year and destined to stay), plus, I have included some materials in this email. If that isn’t enough to get you revved, you can come to the installation of the tapete and altars and come to a Third Thursday program where you can hear from the community members who created the altars.

Exhibition Installation
Sunday, October 16, 10 am5 pm
Observe or participate as artists create a sand painting while community members install altars remembering loved ones and raising social awareness. Free with museum admission.

Third Thursday October
What’s Behind That Altar: Presentations by the Artists
Thursday, October 20, 6-7 pm

Join us for free Third Thursday to learn about Día de los Muertos altars from the artists themselves. The construction of altars and ofrendas (offerings) dedicated to the spirits of the deceased are an important tradition of Día de los Muertos. This year, Tacoma Art Museum invited community groups to display altars—some remembering loved ones, others raising social awareness—on the museum’s atrium from October 16 through October 30.

I look forward to seeing you all today for the Behind the Scenes lecture with Margaret at 11 am!

Best regards,

-Jana

Hey Jana,

Barbara DePiro had this on FB and I thought you might want to share it with the other docents. She's the one who did the acrylic drip down the wall during the last biennial (I think). Anyway, I didn't really understand her work and neither did most of the people I talked to, but this video that she made explains alot and is really cool.
