July 2 coverage

Hi everyone,
I am looking for someone to cover my 12:30-4:30 shift
on Friday, July 2. I would be happy to switch and
cover the afternoon shift on Friday, July 9. Is
anyone available? Thank you so much,
Holly

Special Events Committee

Dear Docents,

As you may have heard some rumblings about, we are looking to start a small committee of docents who are interested in planning and administering special events, extracurricular learning opportunities, and social outings. This committee would help to organize trips like the Portland Art Museum trip this Saturday, social events like our summer potluck, and other learning opportunities like the book club we discussed yesterday at training.

Many of you have indicated that you would like a chance to incorporate some of these less formal events and get-togethers into the program. In the past year, since we have been working so hard to increase our docent coverage and to get used to the building, and because I was new to my position, we haven’t had much time for this kind of extracurricular activity. However, I think now is a great time to implement it now that we’ve been in the building for a year.

I am looking for about 5 people who would be interested in forming this committee. The committee would be responsible for coming up with ideas and for implementing them. I will of course be here for guidance, but since these activities will be designed to make the program more enjoyable for you, it will work best if the ideas come from within the group.

Please let me know if you’re interested.

Summer Mondays

Hi Everyone,

I still need to cover the morning shift on the “A”
week Mondays this summer. Since it doesn’t seem that
there is anyone who can do that for the entire summer,
I’m wondering if some of you might be willing to take
just one Monday shift in addition to your regular
shifts. There are seven A week Mondays:

June 7
June 21
July 5
July 19
Aug 2
Aug 16
Aug 30

If you are free one of these mornings and would like
to sign up for an individual day in addition to your
regular shift, please let me know. The June 21 date
conflicts with Monday morning training so if you
signed up for that day you would need to attend the
training the previous Wednesday evening, June 16.

Thanks for checking your calendars to see if you can
take one of these dates. Mondays are important because
we participate in “Museum Mondays” with Museum of
Glass and Washington State History Museum, and because
we get a lot of out-of-towners on long weekend trips.

Thanks

Mailing List ?

Hello Fellow Docents,

What do you think about a TAM Docent mailing list?
That'll make it much easier to write to and reply to
the entire TAM Docents group and we don't have to
remember anyone's email address or the long email list
in the To: or the Cc: box.

In fact, I can set it up so that it'll automatically
blog on this page!

All you'll have is one email address to mail to all
docents.

Let me know.

Sanjeev

NYTimes - The Library That Puts on Fishnets and Hits the Disco

Hre is the NYTimes story that Tara was passing around.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/16/arts/design/16MUSC.html

NYTimes

AT a dark hour, Seattle's new Central Library is a
blazing chandelier to swing your dreams upon. If an
American city can erect a civic project as brave as
this one, the sun hasn't set on the West. In more than
30 years of writing about architecture, this is the
most exciting new building it has been my honor to
review. I could go on piling up superlatives like cars
in a multiple collision, but take my word: there's
going to be a whole lot of rubbernecking going on.

The new library, which opens next Sunday, was designed
by Rem Koolhaas/OMA of the Netherlands in
collaboration with the Seattle firm LMN Architects.
Joshua Ramus of OMA was the partner in charge. It is
the centerpiece of an ambitious initiative to revamp
and expand Seattle's library system citywide. This is
Seattle, don't forget: a city where fortunes have been
made on the premise that books, and even cities, may
be rendered obsolete by digital technology. Yet this
new library sets an example for cities nationwide.

Article on Lewis @ Clark

Hello, docents! there is a very good article in the May 15th ECONOMIST on Lewis and Clark. Happy docenting, Karin Morris.

group tours

Hi Everyone,

We have put together some marketing packages of information about adult group tours. These went out about a week ago to more than 175 organizations (senior centers, tour companies, etc.) and we have already had some tours booked as a result.

I have about 15 or so of these packages left. If you know of or are involved any organization that might be interested in booking a group tour, please send me their contact information and I will send them one of the packages. This can be any type of group: civic, alumni, church, etc—anyone with ten or more people that might enjoy a docent-led tour.

Thanks

Tara
