FW: Roy Lichtenstein Training

Here are the online versions of some of the documents that I previously sent out.

Roy Lichtenstein Interview.

Originally recorded in January 1966 by David Sylvester in New York City for broadcast by BBC Third Programme. The interview was reedited for publication in 1997 for David Sylvester's "Some Kind of Reality".

On Pop Art:

The “Intro to Lichtenstein” document was scanned from a book so I cannot easily make the file smaller, but I will research this a little more. If you didn’t receive it, please do a little research about Lichtenstein on your own, and I will have printed copies of the file for you at Monday’s training.

Subject: Roy Lichtenstein Training

Before the Docent Training on Monday, March 27 at 10:30 am, please read the 3 attached files (about 10 pages total) and start doing a little bit of preliminary research on Roy Lichtenstein, Pop Art and Cubism (maybe about 20 minutes research on the internet or in books).

Docent Training on Monday, March 27 at 10:30 am will involve the following:

  • Watching a short, 30-minute movie about Lichtenstein’s process and influences
  • Making notes on and discussing what you have learned about Lichtenstein
    • Notes will be made by everyone on large papers stuck to the wall and will address 3 different themes: Lichtenstein Highlights (biography info), Lichtenstein’s Influences, and Pop Art/Cubism. Please be prepared to write down a few tidbits of information!
    • We would also like 3 or 4 of you to give small summaries (1 or 2 minutes only) of what you learned about Lichtenstein and Pop Art and Cubism, from the readings and from your own preliminary research. Not everyone will have to do this but hopefully a few of you will volunteer to share your knowledge.
  • Rock’s lecture introduction to the exhibition Roy Lichtenstein: American Indian Encounters.

I’m not asking you to do hours of homework, but please do brush up on Pop Art and Cubism and what else was going on around Roy Lichtenstein in the 1950s when he first came to prominence. As those of you who are teachers already know, knowledge piles up slowly and cumulatively, and I think Rock’s lecture will be more relevant if we approach it with a good background.

Note to Wednesday Night trainees:

The attached documents are the same readings that were given to you at Wednesday night’s training. We have re-arranged what we did a little bit to hopefully make the training more effective.

Docent Needed: Friday, April 7 from 10-2

Can anyone do a docent shift (or trade a shift) on Friday, April 7 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm?

This is the week of the Garden Show, so it should be busier than usual.

We don’t expect you to be in the galleries, on your feet, for the entire four hours! Please feel free to take a break whenever and wherever you need it – in the ARC, the Untitled CafĂ©, the Museum Store, or outside the museum. Just let Visitor Services know where you are, and they will find you if someone requests a docent.

And I will always contact you if there is a tour or other event for which you are needed at a specific time. Otherwise, it is completely up to you to decide when you are most needed and how long you can manage in the galleries.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

Thanks for your time!

Please make sure that you attend the next training session:

Wednesday, March 22 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm

OR

Monday, March 27 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

This will be the introduction for Roy Lichtenstein: American Indian Encounters, given by Rock Hushka, in the Event Space.

Previously, I told you that there would be a “research assignment” for this training session but that will not happen. Instead, we will be doing some short readings at the beginning of the training and a short workshop related to the readings.

However, you do have a small homework assignment: in preparation for the Lichtenstein exhibition, please read or revisit:

·        Responding to Art, Chapter 19: The Second Half of the Twentieth Century
(this is from the textbook that was used for the most recent docent training in 2005-06)

Please remember that all docents are expected to attend all training sessions – that means both the Introduction and the Workshop/Walk-through portions for each exhibition. If you can’t attend a training session, please let me know in advance if possible. Otherwise, we will probably be contacting you and sending you a tour outline to complete before touring the exhibition.

Docent Sign-In Sheet at the security entrance

Please keep your “shift hours” and “independent study hours” separate when you fill in the Docent Sign-In Sheet at the downstairs security entrance at the parking lot level.

What I mean is: if you spend 5 hours at the museum – 4 hours as a docent and 1 hour doing research in the Art Resource Center – please enter “4” as your “total hours this shift” and enter “1” as your “number of independent study hours” (and not “5” as “total hours this shift“ and “1” as “number of independent study hours”).

I’m sure most of you are already doing this!
