TAM: car pool info for Cecelia Beaux lecture on April 3

The Cecelia Beaux lecture by Sylvia Yount is on Tuesday, April 3 at 6 pm at the Henry Art Gallery on the University of Washington campus.

Tacoma Art Museum will have a Cecelia Beaux exhibition next fall from September 2007 – January 2008. (more info and pictures are included at the bottom of this email)

The following people have indicated interest in attending the lecture and car-pooling: Anne Seago, Linda Flatley, Ellen Shigeno, Margaret Upshaw, and Bev Bright. If you are on this list, please confirm that you definitely still do want to attend.

If you are willing to drive and take a few others in your car, please let me know how many people you can take with you. I will be driving and can comfortably take 3 people with me, and as long as one other person drives, we should be fine.

How the car-pool will work:

Let's meet at Tacoma Art Museum, in the lunch room on the Admin Level at 4:15, and be ready to leave at 4:30 pm. I think that this will give us enough time to drive up to the Henry for 6:00 pm.

If you are not at Tacoma Art Museum by 4:30 pm, we will have to leave without you. (Sorry, I do not have a cell phone.)

About visiting the Henry galleries at the same time:

The Henry galleries are only open until 5:00 pm. If you would like to also take this opportunity to visit the galleries, you will have to leave earlier than 4:30. If you want to do this, let me know and I will try to organize something.

This is what's on at the Henry (Bruce Nauman (!) among other things): http://www.henryart.org/exhibitions.htm

Cecilia Beaux: American Figure Painter
September 27, 2007 – January 6, 2008

Cecilia Beaux presents a retrospective of one of the leading female artists working in the United States in the nineteenth century. Her forty-year career represents a compelling and underexamined chapter in the history of American art. In an effort to fully understand Beaux’s artistic independence, ambition, and appeal, this retrospective will situate her better known portrait commissions in the broader context of early commercial, student, and French productions as well as later landscape and still-life compositions. The exhibition seeks to uncover a richer dimension to her work by exploring questions of gender, class, and the importance of place.

This exhibition is organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia and is touring nationally.

Some of you may remember Becky Frehse from the 2004 Northwest Biennial, in which she was represented. She is teaching a painting class at Tacoma Art Museum in April, and I thought this might interest some of you.

TAM: TAM membership at SAM

My mistake: Tacoma Art Museum members do receive $2 off adult admission and 20% off membership at SAM, the same as SAM members do here.

Some answers to questions from today’s training:

  • Unfortunately, Seattle Art Museum does not offer free admission or any other benefits to Tacoma Art Museum volunteers, docents or members. However, when visiting any museum, I would encourage you to always mention that you are a Tacoma Art Museum docent at the admission desk, and ask if they offer any special offers or discounts – I know that I have often received a discount in this same way (when I was a volunteer).

  • Jim Riswold does paint his Nazi figurines but they are not altered. What I mean by this is that he buys army figurine models that are intended to be Nazi armies (a quick web search will reveal many sites that sell such things), and they often come unpainted. So he does paint them himself, but in the way that they were intended to be painted – he does not paint a regular army model soldier to be a Nazi soldier.

  • Tacoma Art Museum does not have any of Anya Kivarkis’ jewelry pieces in the permanent collection.
