TAM Docents: Links to the Pilchuck Manual

Hello Docents-

Sanjeev has come to the rescue again. You will find links below to read the manual if you didn’t get the previous attachment. There is a nice reminder that we have a blog too. It even says at the top of the blog page that you can rant, in case any of you feel like going on a tear about anything (except about my plethora of emails to you today – I promise this is the last one I’ll send out before I leave at 5:30 pm).

Here's the link to read the document.

It's also on the blog ... you can find it here:

TAM Docents: Pilchuck Docent Manual a good resource

Hello Docents-

Judi has been so kind as to share a copy of the 2010 docent Manual for the Pilchuck Glass School. I have looked it over only briefly so far but I am already wildly impressed with the breadth of information about glass art. I hope that you will also find it useful. I will send a copy via email (I am sending this first in case the attachment keeps it from coming through to your email account) but a copy will be available at the Docent Desk by next week.

Thank you,

-Jana

TAM Docents: Glass Samples Now Available

Hello Docents-

Thanks to Allison Baer and summer camp, we now have our glass samples for Chihuly tours. There is a blown glass float, a fused glass plaque, and several small pieces that have paint and fused glass. A nice sampling. Those will be on a shelf at the docent desk, though I don’t have a basket for them yet. Judi is currently using a couple of the samples for a tour right now!

Please continue thinking about objects that can be used for your tours to enhance the experience.

Thank you,

-Jana

TAM Docents: Docent Desk Shelf Clean-up

Hello Docents-

I couldn’t help but notice that there don’t seem to be many check-outs from the books available to docents at the docent desk. When I reviewed the books, I also noticed that many of them were not really relevant to research needs you may have in most cases. I took it upon myself to remove the books I didn’t think would really be useful to you again. As you may have another view, I have left said books in 3 stacks on the desk with Post-it notes that say “Docents Review”. If you feel strongly about any of these books, feel free to put a Post-it on it saying “keep” or some such to let me know. Any books we do not keep will go towards the March 2011 book sale we will be having. I will leave those books on the desk through next week, then they become part of the book sale’s inventory (and you can have a chance to own them, should you want to come purchase it at the book sale).

Along these lines, if you feel strongly about having the museum acquire a book we do not already have that could be a valuable docent resource, please do not hesitate to ask at any time. I would be happy to take that into consideration for purchase. In particular, we would want to have books with long shelf-lives in terms of topic, so keep that in mind.

Thank you,

-Jana

TAM Docents: Checklists for new exhibitions

Hello Docents and VS Specialists-

As you hopefully know, the Chihuly collection is being moved from the lobby cases and the Davis Gallery as I type. They will now be found in the Bill and Bobby Street Gallery in an exhibition titled Chihuly: Gifts from the Artist. We understand that the transition will be completed by early August (no set date). The lobby cases will then transition to a Howard Kottler exhibition space. There is more information available on Howard Kottler in the ARC though many of you may remember him from previous exhibitions. Copies of the checklist will be available at the docent desk today.

Thank you,

-Jana

Hello everybody,
Attached are some images from latest exhibitions that haven't made it to my website yet.
Just want to keep you all in the loop.
First set of images is a piece I built for the Artopia Arts and Music Festival.  It transpired in late June in Georgetown, just south of downtown Seattle.  I received a grant from 4Culture (Seattle) to build a life-sized boardwalk where I was able to create a venue by having a few bands play on it and have belly dancers do their thing on it as well.  My intention was to have the public at large participate by walking on it.  I pulled out a $2 million dollar insurance policy on it for the duration of the show but the owners of the property wouldn't have it.  I convinced them to allow the public to walk on only half of it.  Let's just say, they are receiving an angry letter.  Can't tell you how wrong it was seeing numerous security guards kicking the little kids off the boardwalk.  Lame!
Second set of images are some pieces I did in memory of my Dad. "Rocket to Pops"  and "Wheelchair be Damned".  This show is at Pratt Fine Arts Gallery and runs to the end of July.
Thank you for indulging my ramblings and I hope all of you are doing swell during this magical summer.
Peace, love and rockets....
