TAM Docents: Docent Dates for Rockwell Group Tours

Hello Docents-

I am sending this first request out for Rockwell docents so that I can remind our new folks to really step up for these tours as much as possible. We are expecting a run on these tours and there will be morning and after hours tours to cover in addition to regular daytime tours. We will have to work pretty hard for about 3 months and then we will move on to Chihuly season. We are in for a wild ride for a while. Thank you all for all that you do to make Tacoma Art Museum a special place for so many of our visitors. Please let me or Megan Ristine know if you can work either of the highlighted tours below.

Thanks again,

-Jana

TAM Docents: New Show and Tell Item

Hello Docents-

The Curatorial Department has gifted us with some archival cardboard. Now we can use that when talking about Leroy. I have rubberbanded 3 pieces together.

1)    Because I already soiled 2 of the 3 pieces since I had just put lotion on my hands right before Ellen handed them to me. It makes a good example of why we don’t want to touch Leroy and the center, still untouched piece, can be viewed by removing the rubberband (just don’t touch it!) to show how pristine it is by comparison. After all, the outside pieces will just get dirtier and dirtier the more they are handled.

2)    By putting the 3 pieces together and suggesting that people try to flex them (not bend!), they can get a sense of how strong layers can be (I already bent one trying out this theory on the strength of one versus several) and why an armature is not particularly necessary for Leroy.

Now, have any of you been using the props? If so, how is that working out? If not, What are some of the reasons (forget to get them? Not particularly useful? Etc). I would like to know if this is something we should keep trying.

Thank you,

-Jana
