TAM Docents: Chihuly Docent needed on Friday, May 7

Hello Docents-

I need a Chihuly Walking tour docent for Friday, May 7 at 2 pm. This would be for a reporter and her husband who is doing a story on glass art in Tacoma, with a particular Chihuly focus. This would be their first location on a weekend trip so we would be her introduction her to Tacoma and Chihuly. Her story is intended to promote Tacoma as a summer destination. I could really use your help, if you are available to help Tacoma shine on this day.

Thank you,

-Jana

TAM Docents: Info and Updates

Hello Docents-

I would like to recommend this Third Thursday’s program:

How Things are Built

Thursday, April 16, 6:30 pm

Architectural historian and entertaining storyteller Michael Sullivan takes us on a virtual tour of some of Tacoma’s great moments of architectural ingenuity, structural innovation, and engineering failure.

I went to the 2nd Tuesday talk of the same name and content today and it had some great information and history about Tacoma’s buildings that could be quite useful. It is just plain interesting too.

I have attached a glossary of jewelry terms for you to read through. We have our next required training on Monday, April 27 at LeRoy Jewelry, located at 940 Broadway. If you want to walk over as a group, please be sure you are at the Security entrance at 10:15 am as that will be departure time. Please come prepared to ask questions related to how jewelry is made. You might even want to look through the Ornament as Art Catalog in the ARC or at my desk to get a sense of the jewelry pieces being shown – feel free to copy photos if you want to be able to show something specific to Steph while asking your question. This is a great opportunity so let’s take advantage of it.

Hi Jana,

I just found a website for Neddy nominee Tim Cross and added it to that list of websites that I emailed to you last week. Here is the URL: http://www.timothycross.org/exhibitions.htm. I thought the docents might find this useful.

2009 Neddy Artist Fellowship Nominees Announced
Artists’ Exhibition on View at Tacoma Art Museum May 23 through October 4, 2009

(Tacoma, WA) Tacoma Art Museum presents the works of the eight 2009 Neddy Artist Fellowship nominees this summer, May 23 through October 4, 2009. The Neddy Artist Fellowship (“the Neddy”), established by the Behnke Family and the Behnke Foundation, is one of the few unrestricted cash awards granted to visual artists in the Northwest. The Foundation recently announced this years finalists. The artists nominated for painting are Tim Cross, Eric Elliott, Gary Faigin, and Lynda Lowe. The finalists for glass are Benjamin Moore, April Surgent, and the artist teams of Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora Mace; and Jenny Knowles and Sabrina Pohlman. The two Fellowship recipients—one in each category—will be announced at the Tacoma Art Museum Members Opening and Artist Party Saturday, June 6 at 6:30 pm. Admission to that event is free for all attendees.
This is the fifth year Tacoma Art Museum has collaborated with the Behnke Family and the Behnke Foundation to host the exhibition of finalists for this prestigious award. "We are delighted by our partnership with the Behnke Family and the Behnke Foundation. We share the common goal of highlighting exemplary artists working in the Northwest," said Tacoma Art Museum Director Stephanie Stebich. "The Neddy Artist Fellowship is one of only a handful of significant regional awards for visual artists offering substantial monetary support.”
"The Neddy continues to highlight the region’s most intriguing artists," said Rock Hushka, Tacoma Art Museum’s Director of Curatorial Administration and Curator of Contemporary and Northwest Art. "The painters span the diverse styles and subject matter that engage Northwest artists. This year’s new category of glass honors the internationally acclaimed accomplishments of artists working in Seattle. There are very interesting intersections and interplay between them."
The Neddy was established in 1996 as a memorial to Robert E. (Ned) Behnke (1948–1989) by the Behnke Family and the Behnke Foundation, who sought to honor Ned
s contributions to the Northwest artistic community. The Fellowship is presented to Northwest artists who demonstrate artistic excellence, innovation, unique vision, and a passionate commitment to their art and community. Originally conceived as an award for painters, the Neddy was soon expanded to recognize work by artists in other media. Fellowship recipients are awarded $15,000.

The exhibition will include works by each of the finalists that will be selected primarily from the artists studios, private collections, and Tacoma Art Museums permanent collection.
Tacoma Art Museum connects people and builds community through art. The museum serves the diverse communities of the region through its collection, exhibitions, and learning programs, emphasizing art and artists from the Northwest. The museum
s five galleries display an array of top national shows, the best of Northwest art, creatively themed exhibitions, and historical retrospectives. In addition, there is an Education Wing for children, adults, and seniors with an art resource center, classroom, and studio for art making. Tacoma Art Museum is located in Tacomas Museum District, near the Museum of Glass, the Washington State History Museum, and historic Union Station.
