Docent Training Updates

Dear Docents,

It was great to see many of you at our training with Barbara Johns on Wednesday. What an inspiring talk! We will be purchasing copies of Barbara’s book, Signs of Home, for the Gates Library and docent resource room.

I appreciate the quick feedback you all shared regarding the training schedule and needs for the docent program. As we move through staff transitions, I will be managing the docent training curriculum to ensure that you all feel educated, inspired, and prepared to empower our visitors to have personally meaningful experiences with our exhibitions and collections. To do that, we will look for a rich balance between access to the curators and other scholar experts matched with more hands-on techniques training for bringing that great information to our visitors in useful ways.

I will also be sending out a survey to assess best days, times, and strategies for effective docent training. Once we get your responses we will solidify the training schedule for September – December! Stay tuned for details and dates.

In the meantime, I want to get the next two training dates on your calendar:

Thursday, July 30, 1:00-2:00pm

Art AIDS America Presentation from HANC

Project Manager Bertram Johnson from the Legacy Project, of the Office of HIV/ADIS Network Coordination (HANC) at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle will discuss the current research on vaccine and clinical treatment research being conducted at the labs in Seattle. One of the projects includes work with Timothy Brown, known as the Berlin patient—the only individual thought to HIV eradicated from his body. He will also speak about his role as a connector between diverse communities and the research scientists.

Wednesday, August 12, 10:30am-12:00pm

Annual Exhibition Overview and Planning Session

Please join us to learn more about the exhibitions planned for the year (October 2015 – July 2016), to review results from docent survey, and discuss proposed docent training schedule and strategies.

Please note: there will not be training on Wednesday, August 5.

Let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you at TAM soon!

Thanks,

Samantha

Docent Updates

Hi docents,

A few updates and Samantha will also be sending an email…

UPDATES:

·         Library Books—Last meeting, it was mentioned that it would be beneficial to borrow books from the library. Of course you can borrow books from the volunteer shelf at any time (I just added two copies of the Shimomura catalogue, and more resources are coming soon). You may also register as educators and borrow books from the teacher resources part of the library. In terms of the main collection, let’s keep this on a case by case basis for now, and just email me if you are interested in a specific book loan. Similarly if you think we should buy certain books to add to the volunteer loaning shelves, let me know.

·         New Videos Available—The TAM Symposium video is now available on TAM’s website and on the docent vimeo page (http://vimeo.com/album/3138244   tamdocent123). Rock’s Shimomura presentation can only be watched on the volunteer computer on admin. It is located on the desktop and you can stop by to watch it anytime at Kara’s old desk. I also checked and the old Hide/Seek videos are still up on vimeo if anyone is interested in reviewing them.
