Docents: some upcoming trainings in 2013

Hello, wonderful docents:

 

I hope the start of the holiday season is treating you well so far! Before we all go about our various traveling and festivity, I wanted to make sure you save the dates for our early trainings in 2013. I will have a full calendar for you in January, but please get these upcoming required and suggested training opportunities on your calendars now:

Curator Lecture: Best of the Northwest Revisited

Curator Margaret Bullock shares some of the finest examples of paintings by Northwest artists from Tacoma Art Museum’s collection in Best of the Northwest: Selected Paintings from the Collection. Come hear her discuss the exhibition, including a second rotation of works on view since November. A walk-through of the gallery will follow the lecture. Free with museum admission/free for docents. (This is also a public program.)

Artist Lecture and Book Signing: Michael Kenna

As we unveil the second rotation of artwork in the exhibition (opening January 11), come hear from the artist as he presents an overview of his work and artistic approach, and shares stories about the works on view. This program is free for docents as a required training.

Guiding visitors through Michael Kenna’s concentration camp photographs
Rabbi Bruce Kadden of Temple Beth El will join us to discuss some difficult, stark, emotional imagery in the new Kenna rotation, and to share his experience in recent travels with his wife to concentration camps in Poland (Auschwitz and Maidanek) and the Czech Republic (Terezin). We also welcome you all to share any relevant experiences and/or any questions or thoughts on approaching this art with visitors.

Join Eric Shiner, Director of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, to learn more about the life and work of this iconic artist. Docents receive student rate of $5.

Symposium: Crafting Public Spaces for Art

Join us on the opening day of Drawing Line Into Form: Works on Paper by Sculptors from the BNY Mellon Collection to hear a variety of local experts and artists discuss the philosophy and planning that go into creating an outdoor sculpture program. Docents receive student rate of $10.
