TAM: Chuck Close readings

Attached are some readings for the Chuck Close exhibition, A Couple of Ways of Doing Something: Photographs by Chuck Close, Poems by Bob Holman. There is one more file that I will send in a separate email because it is large.

In addition, the following resources are recommended:

Ÿ         Movie documentary: Chuck Close: A Portrait in Progress, by Marion Cajori. Emmy nominated PBS documentary on Chuck Close, his family, friends, and art. This documentary can be viewed in the Art Resource Center, and is also available from Netflix or other movie rental outlets.

Ÿ         Chuck Close, Process and Collaboration: http://www.chuckclose.coe.uh.edu/

For the Chuck Close A Couple of Ways of Doing Something exhibition, it is highly recommended that you attend the following programs as training:

Ÿ          Tuesday, March 11, 6-7 pm – Know More Art: Chuck Close: The Man behind the Camera
Rock Hushka will be giving this lecture, and it is highly recommended that you try to attend. I will be emailing some reading materials about Chuck Close's life and career for those of you who cannot make this lecture.

Ÿ          REQUIRED: Monday, March 3, 10:30 am-12:30 pm OR Wednesday, March 5, 5:30-7:30 pm – Chuck Close Exhibition Walk-Through with Rock Hushka
This training is for docents only, and Rock will be walking us through the exhibition. We changed the docent training schedule to add this walk-through instead of a lecture with Rock, because we felt a walk-through would be more useful to you.

Ÿ          March 11, 10:30-11:30 am – Beyond the Snapshot, Modern Photography Techniques (Second Tuesday program)
Steve Davis, photographer and Evergreen College faculty member (and in the Tacoma Art Museum permanent collection—see Telling Stories), presents some of the older and more contemporary techniques of art photography. For those of you who think you need more training on photography, please try to attend this program.

I also want to remind you that over the last few years, we have had several exhibitions with significant photography sections and docent training on photography: William B. Post and pictorialism, Frida Kahlo, Paul Strand (and the Stieglitz relationship), Great American Thing (Stieglitz again), Contemporary Photography and the Garden: Deceits and Fantasies (which included several contemporary photographers), and Margaret Bourke-White.

Thanks for your time!

THE MAESTRO FROM MURANO

Lino Returns to the Hot Shop

February 13 – 17 and
February 27 – March 2, 2008
9 am – 3 pm Wednesday – Saturday; 12 – 5 pm Sunday

Lino TagliapietraLino Tagliapietra is back in the Hot Shop for two 5-day Visiting Artist residencies! Widely revered as the maestro of glassblowing, Lino was instrumental in promoting the early Studio Glass movement in the Pacific Northwest. In 1979, he first came to Pilchuck Glass School and shared with American glassmakers his vast knowledge gained from years of work in the Murano glass community. This act began a chain reaction of shared knowledge that universally elevated the art and craft of glassmaking and changed the course of contemporary glass.

Don't miss your opportunity to see the maestro at work! Watch him create exquisite works of art as he takes a seat at the artist's bench in the Hot Shop. Then come back and see examples of his superior design technique and craftsmanship from throughout his career in Lino Tagliapietra in Retrospect: A Modern Renaissance in Italian Glass, opening February 23 (see below).

Note: The Museum will open at 9 am Wednesday – Saturday for this residency.

TWO NEW EXHIBITIONS OPENING IN FEBRUARY

Dante Marioni: Form, Color, Pattern

Opens Saturday, February 16

Lino TagliapietraDante Marioni: Form, Color, Pattern is a mid-career survey comprising more than twenty exceptional glass works crafted over the past two decades by Seattle artist, Dante Marioni. The exhibition explores the ways Marioni has been inspired by both historical and contemporary glassblowers. Drawing upon the centuries-long artistic conversation about classical design, proportion, and aesthetics that dates back to the ancient roots of the art form, he is also influenced by the teachings of contemporary mentors, such as Lino Tagliapietra, to create a style distinctively his own.
