Here's an invite from Christina Cao

Hello Docents,

Here's an invite from Christina Cao ...

Host: Christina Cao
When: Saturday, September 12, 6:30PM

Dearest Friends and Family,

I enjoyed spending time with others in the livelihood of eating. For
fun, I want to celebrate the essence of friendship and love.

On a nice Saturday evening of September 12, 2009, my cooking will
consist the wonderful Vietnamese noodle soup called pho.

The Zen of Pho really brings out the best of us in which we constanly
need to return on having many meditative moments of eating the nice
steaming broth with rice noodles, basil, bean sprouts, scallions,
onions, lime, variety of tender meats, hoisin sauce and hot chili
sauce repeatedly.

Please join me in a wonderous, exotic pleasure of eating. Imagine tiki
lights, silks, pillows, chinese lanterns, tiger lilies, cherrywood
vases, and complete oriental comfort and decor in a nice marina
setting with a renaissance cityscape of cable/steel bridges, restored
and reinforced brick buildings, modernism in steel architecture for
living and culture, sailboats/yachts, fountains, sculptures, green
spaces, and public glass art.

We all can go on this luxurious pho journey. The dessert will be mochi
ice cream in surprising flavors of mango, green tea, chocolate, and
vanilla. I love to see you there.

I may place sake, plum wine or champagne beverages in the moment.

Bow down to the porcelain china bowls of pho-delicious. Let's have
nice lotus moments.

Love,
Christina

TAM Docents: Follow-up to Sept 2 training Second attempt

Docents-

As I received a fair number of email bounce backs, I am re-sending this email but without the attachments. If you would like the attachments, please let me know and I will forward them to you one by one. I will also make copies available for the docent desk.

Thank you for all that you do for Tacoma Art Museum!

Take care,

-Jana

Hello Docents-

Thanks to all of you who participated in Wednesday’s training. I hope you found the debate as useful and interesting as I did. I also appreciate your feedback regarding training days and times. It was determined, as I discerned it, that Wednesday mornings were as good as any other remaining days for trainings and that mornings seemed to be Ok for most as well. There was a request to make trainings earlier (10 am – 12 pm) when possible. As I am trying to finish planning out the year’s docent trainings, any additional feedback on that you may have should come in to me as soon as possible.

For those of you that missed yesterday’s training or for those of you that didn’t but would like to know more about museum education philosophies, Courtney has graciously forwarded on the original articles she used to create her PowerPoint so that you can review. I have put a copy of the printed PowerPoint at the docent desk and would be happy to forward the PDF of that to anyone who wants it. It was thoughtfully put together and has some really good background information.

Finally, a reminder that Paula and I will both be out next week for a conference in Boston. Please contact Allison Baer with any scheduling questions or problems during that time.  If you are able to attend the September 12th program on jewelry, it is highly recommended as NW jewelry is an important part of our collection. I look forward to seeing you at our next required training at MOG on September 20th.

Thank you!

Hi Jana—

Attached are the writings by Gilman and Dana (please excuse my underling & notes) and the basics on VTS.

I’ve only included the key parts. There’s a whole addendum to the Gilman that includes different critical perspectives on him, the Dana goes on quite a bit further (mostly about how you’d actually set up a museum in the style he’s proposing), and of course we’ve got a lot more info on VTS. If folks are interested in reading more they can come by my desk and make some copies; I can even pull out some other useful readings for them.

I was also curious about the Peale Museum (someone had asked if it was still in existence), so I investigated—

Peale Museum:

The museum closed in 1997 and its collections were handed over to the Maryland Historical Society. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. It is currently vacant. (from Wikipedia)

Jana,

Just a reminder we have this tour opportunity for the Lemay collection on Thursday, September 10, 10am and docents are welcome. I understand it is an odd mixed back of textiles, stained glass and painting by knowns and unknowns so could be more bizarre than "arty" but anyone that wants to come should let me know.
