TAM: Docent Needed for Tour: Thursday, September 27 at 6 pm

Can anyone lead a Gee's Bend tour on Thursday, September 27 at 6 pm?

A group from Russell would like a one-hour tour on Thursday, September 27 at 6 pm, focusing mostly on Gee's Bend with small intros to the

other exhibitions.

This would be before training for Gee's Bend and Cecilia Beaux.

Sanjeev has already signed on to help with this group, but we would like to have two docents and be able to split the group in half.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

Thanks for your time!

WSHM Quilt exhibitions open on September 15!

A reminder that The Evolution of the Art Quilt and Washington’s Historic Quilts open at Washington State History Museum on September 15.  Both exhibitions promise to be interesting and informative, offering background on techniques and the history of quilting.  We encourage you to visit these exhibitions as part of your independent study for Gee’s Bend: the Architecture of the Quilt.  Call one of your fellow docents and make a date!  Don’t forget to bring your Tacoma Art Museum badge to receive complimentary admission.

Gee's Bend tour outline and wall text

Hello everyone!  I hope you all have been enjoying our fair September weather!

As promised, here is the tour outline for Gee’s Bend.  Heide and I have filled in some example artworks, quotes, and touring strategies.  Please build on this with your own ideas/insights as you read the catalogue and prepare for your first shift/tour after the September 22 opening!  As many of you will be in the galleries the week prior to our workshop, please let us know if there is anything else you need.  I’ve attached the extended wall text from the exhibition opening in Houston and Heide will be forwarding the checklist and other information this week.

Also, bring your tour outline along with notes, further ideas, and questions to the Gee’s Bend training on October 1 and 3.  I look forward to seeing you in the galleries and at the September 30th Conversation with the Quiltmakers of Gee’s Bend!

TAM: new docent touring schedule

© Dear Docents! ©

As we discussed at last week's trainings, we would like to tweak the Docent Schedule a little to fulfill the following goals:

Ÿ          To offer a daily public tour at 12 noon of Gee's Bend

Ÿ          To have a docent available every day for approximately four hours surrounding the 12 noon public tour

Ÿ         To schedule private tours (two weeks' advance notice required) during your regular docent shifts

Ÿ          To have three docents per weekday.

This will allow Visitor Services to direct visitors to the 12 noon tour and/or the hours that a docent is available.

We would like to have this new docent schedule in place for the Gee's Bend opening on Saturday, September 22.

In order to meet these new goals, I would like to know:

1.       Given at least two weeks' notice, are you flexible as to docent on the same weekday on which you currently docent, but on different, more irregular weeks?
For example, given two weeks' notice, can you be available on any Wednesday instead of every second Wednesday?

2.       Would you like to switch to doing docent shifts on a different weekday? (see Docent Master Schedule attachment)

3.       Does an 11 am – 3 pm (approximately) docent shift on your specified weekday work with your personal schedule? If not, please provide me with some details

4.       Are you regularly available to docent on any other weekday (with two weeks notice)?

5.       Are you ever available to docent on a Saturday or Sunday, even once a month?

The current docent schedule is attached and is listed below.

(The week of September 10-16 is Week A; The week of September 17-23 is Week B.)

·             Tuesdays: Ellen Shigeno, Margaret Upshaw, Florence Reardon, Jim Reardon, Nancy Harris, Katrina Frank

·             Wednesdays: Barbara Abegg, Barbara Beaver, Judi Keyser

·             Thursdays: Karin Morris, Gaard Logan, Sharon Berens

·             Fridays: Anne Seago, Sue Stibbe

·             Saturdays: Penny Grellier, Sanjeev Narang, Roxanne Peterson (once-a-month), Deborah Kernan (once-a-month)

·             Sundays: Debora Cornett (once-a-month)

The Third Thursdays docent schedule will remain the same (Gaard Logan 10-2, Barbara Abegg 12-4, Karin Morris 1-5, Margaret Upshaw 5-8). Tours are promised at 12, 1 pm and 6pm.

Please note that the total number of volunteer hours that you have agreed to commit to Tacoma Art Museum will remain the same.

In addition, Visitor Services will be recording all the inquiries that the front desk receives about docent availability, public tours, and Chihuly Walking Tours. This will allow us to re-consider in January, what the public wants.

About Winter Chihuly Walking Tours:

During the winter (from Labor Day to Memorial Day), Chihuly Walking Tours will be scheduled on demand only, for groups of approximately 4 or more people, with two weeks advance notice. We will be trying to schedule the Chihuly Walking Tours during your existing docent shifts as much as possible.

Please take a week to think this over, and send me a response by Monday, September 17.

If you have any questions, please call me!

Thanks for your time!

TAM: about the MR prints

At the Mary Randlett training, the question came up of why are the Mary Randlett photographs all newly printed for this exhibition?

Here are the reasons that the Curatorial department gave me:

-          Many of the originals were sold to private collectors and were not available for the exhibition.

-          Not all of these images were originally printed to the exhibition size and quality. Mary Randlett's focus on landscape is a more personal series that she did for her own enjoyment. For this exhibition, she went back to her collection of contact sheets and prints to choose the images in conjunction with Rock.

-          Mary Randlett's interest in abstraction in her photographs has increased as she has gotten older. As a result, some of the more abstract images in the exhibition were more interesting to her now than when they were originally shot, and she may not have originally printed them with this same interest in abstraction.

-          Mary Randlett offered to re-print the photographs because we have a close and long-standing relationship with her, and Tacoma Art Museum was more than happy to accept her generous offer.

Thanks for your time!

TAM: definition: burning in

I think this is a better definition of "burning in":

"Burning-in is a technique by which a photographer can darken the tones of a specific area of a photograph. It is used to alter highlight areas that show too little detail, i.e., are too light in tone, or for dark areas that are too light. The photographer usually decides to employ burning-in after examining the negative, a contact sheet, or, more likely, an enlarged trail print from the negative. The technique is most often used during enlargement and consists of interposing for part of the exposure a piece of cardboard, plastic, or the like, with a hole cut out in its center, between the beam of light coming through the negative via the enlarging lens and the print being made. The unshaded area receives more light and hence darkens, which gives more detail in highlight areas. To avoid creating a sharp shadow outline, the photographer moves the cardboard back and forth. Depending on the shape and size of the area to be darkened, holes or silhouettes of various kinds can be cut in the cardboard. The photographer can also use his or her cupped hands or fingers to shade the print. If a photographer uses burning-in while contact-printing, she or he interposes the instrument between the light source and the negative."
