Follow-Up from Docent Training

Hello Docents,

Thanks for a great discussion about the Eloquent Objects exhibition on Wednesday. I always learn as much from your questions as from our curators. We are booking lots of tours, so here is additional material to help you best prepare.

I’ve attached the audio tour script, the labels and wall panel text, and some notes from Margaret are here below:

Two fun facts I forgot to pass on during today's tour:

1) The big O'Keeffe painting "Jimson Weed" belonged to cosmetics maven Elizabeth Arden

2) Rebecca James' parents were the managers of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show (she painted the image of shells that is reverse-painted on glass)

Some book suggestions

the exhibition catalogue by Charles Eldredge Eloquent Objects: Georgia O'Keeffe and Still Life Art in New Mexico

Portrait of an Artist: A Biography of Georgia O'Keeffe by Laurie Lisle

Georgia O'Keeffe and Her Houses by Barbara Buhler Lynes and Agapita Judy Lopez

Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico: Architecture, Katsinam and the Land by Barbara Buhler Lynes and Carolyn Kastner

Other authors of O'Keeffe books that are reliable sources (look for publication dates in the 1990s and beyond, ideas about O'Keeffe and her work have shifted over the decades )

Barbara Buhler Lynes

Peter Hassrick

Charles Eldredge

Barbara Haskell

Bruce Robertson

Docent Training tomorrow

Hello Docents,

I look forward to seeing you all at docent training tomorrow, Wednesday, March 4th at 11:00am in the Murray Event Space. (Reminder: there is no business meeting at 10:30). Margaret Bullock will share her insights on the new Eloquent Objects: Georgia O’Keeffe and Still-Life Art exhibition and give us a gallery tour.

We’re receiving loads of interest in group tours, so I hope you are ready to learn and sign up for tours! The exhibition is stunning, and we also feature a still-life exhibition from our northwest collection in the Russell Gallery. I’m attaching an informational graphic about the exhibition, which will give you some quick talking points, should you need them.

And, I’m delighted to announce that Britt Board is now on staff as our new Community Engagement Manager. You will love her – she brings enthusiasm, proven museum education experience, great new ideas, and wonderful people skills to TAM. She will oversee and coordinate all aspects of our community festivals and develop activities for TAM Studio. She is making an effort to meet everyone, but please feel free to come down to the education offices if you haven’t yet met her. I’m also copying her on this email, so you can reach out to her directly.

We are still working to fill the positions of Educator for Adult Learning and Educator for Student and Youth Learning, so more introductions are sure to follow in the coming months.

Kara returns from vacation on March 14th. In the meantime, please let me know if you need anything or if I can be of assistance.

Best regards,

Samantha
