Thank you!

Dear Docents,

Thank you so much for the gift certificate to the museum store. I used it to get a bracelet I have had my eye on. I will wear it often and think of you when I do. I also got Ice Bat, one of the Ugly Dolls!

It has been such a wonderful pleasure to work with all of you and I only wish that we could have spent longer together. Thank you so much for your kind words and good wishes for the future.

I hope you will keep in touch. I really mean it when I say that you should come visit me!

Words for Tara

Dear Tara,Teachers offer a gift to their students that can never be measured on any scale, and you have given that inestimable gift to me. I am so glad that I learned to be a docent while you were here in Tacoma, and I know that wherever you go, you will enrich the lives of many other students as well. Thank you for your patience with me when I felt like giving up. I wish you great success and continuing happiness.
Much, Barbara

Here's hoping the museum in your hometown appreciates the gift they are about to receive. Your instruction and leadership have been outstanding and your wealth of knowledge a boon to our docent group. Thank you very much for encouraging me to stick with the program because I enjoy each and every shift "on the floor". You were right; it was worth it. Good luck at your new post and please know you have made us the docents we are today.
All the best. Penny Grellier

Tara, I wish I'd gotten a chance to know you better. In our few encounters you have impressed me with your manner, knowledge, intelligence and your aura of quiet competence. I wish you all the best in your new life.
Sincerely, Shelley Klein

Tara,
I wish you all the best back in Worcester-a town I once called home as well. We have benefited from you greatly! You are a powerhouse of knowledge and your intense love for all things artistic shines through. We will miss you greatly!
Marisa Boyd

Dear Tara,
You taught me how to look at and think about art works. I will enjoy this for the rest of my life. You are a knowledgeable and generous teacher. Thank you for all you have done to the docents. Best wishes on your move.
Thank you Ginny

Tara, I never knew you were a fellow Bay Stater. (I'm a Newton High alum with my MA from B.U.) We'll all miss you. You were by far the least demanding boss I ever worked for.
Dick Sears

Tara, you have been a wonderful Curator of Education. Your art knowledge, manner and method of training have been terrific. You have made being a docent a pure pleasure. Thank you for all of your work! I hope that you enjoy your new job, and being close to family. We will miss you but know that the docent program will continue because of your work.
Cass Brotherton

Dear Tara,
All the best for the future -- you have been such an asset to our docent program! You have encouraged each one of us to develop new skills and to continue to increase our knowledge of art history. You are a special and talented young lady and I shall truly miss you.
Sincerely, Sue Stibbe

Tara,
I will miss you greatly. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and kindness. You helped me find a lost treasure - ART! I will always remember you for that.
Penny Hulse

Dear Tara,
Wishing you all the best on your new job and your move. It was such a pleasure to get to know you this fall. We will all miss you. Best wishes and take care,
Debora Kernan

Great art history classes, wonderful docent training lessons, and fantastic person!! Sorry to see you leave Tara.
Nancy Harris

Dear Tara: It has been a pleasure to have known and worked with you this brief time. Massachusetts gain is Tacoma's loss. The very best to you and your husband on your new endeavors. May you have a beautiful Christmas and the happiest of New Years.
Sincerely, Charlotte Norton

Tara, thanks for your directions and your words that have always been informational and caring. I have especially appreciated you for listening to our questions and comments and incorporating them into the program when possible.
Katrina

Dear Tara,It has been a real pleasure to work with you. You are articulate, well organized, level headed, and knowledgeable. The next place that you work is gaining a treasure. I wish you the very best. Sincerely,Nancy Smith

Thank you, Tara, for sharing your knowledge, and for organizing the volunteer program so well that we hardly notice how much work has gone into it. You're amazing.

I've so enjoyed the time we've had with you and I will miss you. May you enjoy much happiness as you return home; and may you realize all of your career dreams.
Linda Reiter

Dear Tara!I will be very sad to see you leave. You have been one if the best co-coordinators by far since I have worked at TAM. Your gentle but very organized, knowledgeable and responsible approach to this task has endeared you to many, I am sure. Although I am sad to see yougo, I want to send you off with my very heartfelt wishes for a happy future in your new but also familiar next endeavor. They are lucky to get you.Take good care, hugs, Karin Morris.

Dear Tara,

For sharing with us your love of the arts, for your excellent art history knowledge, for taking us to art museums in Seattle and Portland and a visit to Chihuly home and gallery, for your emails that arrived in my in-basket with clock-work precision, for your grace under pressure of a new work place, for creating a docent community at the Tacoma Art Museum, for making it look easy – for all this and more, I shall miss your presence at the TAM.

It has been a pleasure to be your docent. Do stay in touch.

Regards,
Sanjeev

Duchamp's urinal tops art survey

A white gentlemen's urinal has been named the most influential modern
art work of all time.

Marcel Duchamp's Fountain came top of a poll of 500 art experts in the
run-up to this year's Turner Prize which takes place on Monday.

Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) was second, with Andy
Warhol's Marilyn Diptych from 1962 coming third.

Duchamp shocked the art establishment when he took the urinal, signed
it and put it on display in 1917.

"The choice of Duchamp's Fountain as the most influential work of
modern art ahead of works by Picasso and Matisse comes as a bit of a
shock," said art expert Simon Wilson.

Ahead of time

"But it reflects the dynamic nature of art today and the idea that the
creative process that goes into a work of art is the most important
thing - the work itself can be made of anything and can take any
form."

Picasso's Spanish Civil War painting, Guernica, came fourth, while
Matisse's The Red Studio was fifth.

Duchamp has influenced many contemporary artists, including Tracey
Emin - her unmade bed was inspired by the French artist.

December training

Hi All,

I recently sent you all the training calendar for January to June (let Shannon know if you didn’t get it and she will send you one out). Some of you have asked about December, and I just wanted to reiterate that the December calendar is unchanged from what you received in the fall. There is only one training in the month of December, which is the walkthrough of the Building Tradition exhibition with Rock Hushka. This training will be repeated twice, both on Wednesday, December 15, from 6-8 p.m., and on Monday, December 20, from 10:30-12:30. ALL docents, both Active and In-Training, are required to attend. You can attend either session as they will both be the same, and you don’t need to let Shannon know beforehand which one you’re coming to.

Other than this one training session, there is no other December training (though December touring schedules remain the same for Active docents).

Thanks

Tara

new Gallery Guide for self-guided groups

Hi All,

I wanted to tell those of you who haven’t already seen it that we have a new Gallery Guide available for self-guided groups. This can be used by any visitor but was primarily designed to help provide a focus for groups of young visitors who come to the museum on a drop-in basis rather than for a school tour. The guide can be picked up at the front desk and will eventually be able to be downloaded from the website. It is not exhibition-specific but rather directs visitors to look at broader themes, like how artists reflect the Northwest. There is also a discussion of Chihuly’s work.

Please familiarize yourself with this guide by picking one up at the front desk if you haven’t seen it yet. You might get questions from visitors using it, or you might want to recommend it to visitors if they haven’t picked one up from Visitor Services.

Questions about the guide can be directed to
Carri Campbell.

Thanks

Brenda's shift

Hi All,

Please ignore my email about Brenda’s shift. She is on the calendar for Dec. 11, not Dec. 4, so doesn’t have a conflict after all.

Sorry for the confusion!

Thanks
