reminder re Artist Talk this Saturday

Hi Everyone:

I wanted to remind you that Scott Fife will be giving a gallery talk in his exhibition this Saturday, October 23, at
2:00 p.m. This is the perfect chance to ask him those questions you’ve been wondering about, like “why cardboard?” and “why are there puffins on the glove?” The talk is free – you as volunteers can all come in through the back door but your guests, if they are not members, will need to pay admission.

He will also be giving a Tuesday Talk on Tuesday November 9 that will focus on the Idaho Project specifically (so there will be less emphasis on the Idaho Project this Saturday and more emphasis on the rest of the show).

Hope to see you there!

Tara

no training tomorrow -- reminder

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick reminder that there is no Active Docent training tomorrow night or next Monday (though new docents will meet next Monday). Because of various events at the museum, including Back to School Night tomorrow and the Nordstrom Tea on November 1, we are taking a break from our regular Active Docent training until the book club meeting on Wednesday, November 3, or Monday, November 8. For those of you who are not planning to come to the book club, the next time we’ll meet as a group is Wednesday, November 17 or Monday, Nov. 22.

Take care,

FYI re Hudson River

Hi Everyone:

The information below is from the Visitor Services newsletter that Visitor Services Lead Andy Morrison puts out every week. He thought you might find it interesting and wanted me to pass it on to you.

On Tuesday, an older man came in who introduced himself in the galleries as a descendant of the McCray family. That’s right, the very same McCrays as Jane McCray herself!  Through his knowledge of the family history, he shared with me that the label on the wall is actually inaccurate. There are two discrepancies:

 - First, the young soldier fiancée that Jane was going to meet was actually a British soldier, not an American. This was why she was accompanied by Indians in the employ of the British army in order to safely make her journey. The trouble came when a warring tribe happened upon her caravan and attacked them all.  In the process, Jane was killed and then later scalped by the attacking tribe.

 - Secondly, when these Indians brought her scalp to the British, realizing what trouble they had caused, they handed over the scalp without compensation. Therefore no bounty was specifically placed on Jane McCray, nor was one ever paid.

That’s the history as he told it to me. It seems that the discrepancy comes into play because the painting is actually based on a poem written about the event. Both the poem and the painting, while trying to remain essentially accurate, have changed some of the circumstances in order to further incite the American anger toward the British; thus the blue-coated officer in the background rather than a red-coat.

Change in Docents-in-Training training date

Hi Everyone:

I wanted to let everyone know of a change to the training schedule for the Docent in Training class (I’m copying the active docents here because some of you are coming to the art history classes).

We met this morning and our next training time would ordinarily be two weeks from today, or Monday, November 1. However, the entire building is being used that day for the Nordstrom Fashion Tea, so we are not able to hold training. I initially re-scheduled the training by pushing it back a few days to Friday, October 29. However, in discussing this at training today, a few people had a conflict with the 29th.

Therefore, the training for Art History Week 2 will take place on Monday, October 25, at
10:30 a.m. (one week from today).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Tara

RE: proposed observation schedule

Hi Everyone:

I wanted to remind everyone that I have started the process of docent observations based on the schedule below. I will in most cases coming on one tour (and not necessarily staying the full shift).

If the date below doesn’t work for you let me know (I may have to make a few adjustments myself but will do my best to stick to this schedule).

Thanks

Tara

Subject: proposed observation schedule

Dear Docents,

With our new exhibitions open as of tonight, I have finally had a chance to draw up a proposed schedule of docent observations. I will be coming to observe each of you during a regular shift over October and November. This process is intended to give you feedback about your touring strategies, ensure that we are providing our visitors with consistent information, and help me see if there is an area that we need to focus on in training.

I will come to most of your shift but for scheduling reasons may not be able to stay for the whole thing (in some cases I am observing two people on one shift, so will obviously be going back and forth between you). At the end of the shift we will schedule in 15 minutes or so to sit down together and talk about the observation process.

Below is a proposed schedule. Please let me know if you see a conflict. I double-checked that I have scheduled everyone other than people who are on leave or people who have just started touring (i.e. the July graduates, who will be evaluated at a later time). If I have somehow forgotten someone, please let me know. If this schedule works for everyone I will do my best to stick to it but please understand that there may need to be some last-minute shuffling since we are unusually busy this fall in the absence of a curator of education.

I’ll remind you of these dates via your weekly schedules.

Wave-related info.

Hi all:
Found this interesting article on the PBS website about the dam being built in China that, in a way, helped bring us the Museum's central sculpture.

docent needed for Sunday, Oct 24

Dear Docents,

I’m following up on a request that you received last week from Jacqueline. We have a group of physicians coming for a tour at noon on Sunday, October 24. Deborah Cornett is on the schedule, but the group of 60 is too big for one docent. Is there anyone available to help Deborah out by taking half the group? Please let me know by Wednesday, October 20, if you’re available.

Thank you for your consideration.
