TAM: Phillip Glass opera

Sid Cloud let me know that the Metropolitan Opera is performing Philip Glasss opera Satyagraha, about the life of Mahatma Gandhi, on Saturday night.

However, I cannot find (on the internet) if it is being televised. If you find this information, please email the docent blog at tamdocents.tam-zipcode@blogger.com. Check the blog at http://tamdocents.blogspot.com.

Thanks to Sid!

TAM: temporary summer docents

FYI: For this summer’s exhibition of Illuminating the Word, we have recruited a small group of about ten local calligraphers to be temporary docents. They will be attending all of the trainings for Illuminating the Word and Janet Cardiff, and will be touring only these two exhibitions. Because of the nature of these shows, the temporary docents won’t be doing the usual intensive art history overview training. Their tours and schedules will also be slightly different than what you as permanent docents do: the calligraphers will be offering a specialized tour with a focus on calligraphy techniques and materials in the exhibition. Their exact schedule will only be known once we better know what the demand for group tours and specialized tours will be.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me!

Dear Docents,

FYI: The training session on April 21 with Father Hollas will also be attended by a group of community members who are on our Advisory Group for the Illuminating the Word exhibition. The Advisory Group has been invited by Tacoma Art Museum to give feedback on our plans for the exhibition. After Father Hollas’ lecture, the Advisory Group may be splitting into its own group to discuss the museum’s plans for the exhibition.

Thanks for your time!

TAM: resources on Chuck Close

Not that you need more information on Chuck Close, but here are two more things to explore…

The Art Resource Center has put together some great website links related to the Chuck Close exhibition:

Some interesting Chuck Close quotes:

FW: TAM: note takers wanted for April 21 training

Thanks to everyone who has offered to take notes!

Gaard Logan and Karin Morris will cover the task this time, but maybe we will start documenting training with voluntary note-keepers more often. Please let me know if you would find this helpful.

For the April 21 training by Father Hollas, I would like to have one or two official note-takers since a few docents won’t be able to attend the training.
If you are willing to take detailed notes and share them with your fellow docents, please let me know.

TAM: extended summer hours

During the summer, Tacoma Art Museum will have extended hours.

The museum will be open on Mondays from 10 am to 5 pm, from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

For the duration of the Illuminating the Word exhibition this summer (July 12 – September 7), the museum will also be open late until 8 pm on all Thursdays.

To promote the museum’s extended hours, we will be offering a 20% discount on group tours booked on Mondays and Thursday evenings.

Please keep this schedule in mind as you plan your summer, and consider switching shifts or picking up a few of these tours if you can. I will, of course, be recruiting docents to cover all of these tours, once they are booked but I wanted to give you advance notice of this change.

Let me know if you have any questions!
