Hilltop Artists in Residence Spring Glass Sale

Hilltop Artists in Residence Tacoma announces its Spring Glass Sale and glassblowing demonstrations -- at Jason Lee Middle School, 602 N. Sprague Ave. Saturday, June 10 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Starting at 7 a.m. attendees are invited to pick up numbered tickets and return by 9 a.m. to be admitted. Guests will be admitted in the order they obtained tickets. All sale proceeds go directly to fund program costs, including student scholarships and supplies and materials.

HART has provided local youth the opportunity to work at the Museum of Glass: International Center for Contemporary Art, attend the prestigious Pilchuck Glass School on scholarship, visit Dale Chihuly’s Boathouse Studio in Seattle, and learn from other experienced glass artists in at studios in Tacoma and Seattle. The result of their participation in HART is the creation of unique pieces of art, increased self-esteem and hope for their future. All these experiences have contributed to their motivation to stay in school, establish goals and succeed.

Docent Needed for General Tour: Sunday, May 21 at 2 pm

Can anyone do a general museum tour on Sunday, May 21 at 2 pm?

The tour is for a group of 20 to 40 people from Jewish Family Services.

Deborah Cornett is scheduled to docent on that day, but I want to find a second docent so that the tour can be split into two smaller groups.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

Thanks for your time!

pick up your clay pots or else...

The clay pots that were made on March 8 & 13 are available to be picked up somewhere in the loading dock area of the museum for a limited time only!

Please ask security for help if you want to pick up your pot.

Otherwise, all pots will be tossed on May 18 – there are two training sessions before then, so you should all be at the museum at least once before that date.

If you absolutely want to keep your pot, I recommend that you email me about it just to be on the safe side.

REMINDER: Essence of Line readings

Please make sure that you have read the following sections in the “Responding to Art” textbook before Patricia’s Essence of Line intro lecture on May 22 and 24:

  • pages 456–471: “Eighteenth-Century Art: Baroque to Rococo to Neoclassical” and “Neoclassicism, Democracy, and Revolution”, including “Appreciation 30”  This is the period before the Essence of Line exhibition starts, and it is important background information.
  • chapter 16 (pages 477–513): “Art in the Nineteenth Century: Romanticism to Post-Impressionism” which covers Romanticism, Classical Art, Romantic Art and Architecture and Design, Naturalism, Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.

Also, don’t forget that we have one copy of the “Responding to Art” textbook at the Docent Desk bookshelf, and you can borrow it for a few days by checking it out – at the very front of the Docent Log Binder, there are pages with instructions on how to check out books.

Thanks for your time!

Docent Needed for Tour: Wednesday, May 17 at 10:45 am

Can anyone do a Great American Thing tour on Wednesday, May 17 at 10:45 am?

(this tour was already sent out as being on May 19, but the date has changed)

The tour is for a group of 38 college students from UW Tacoma, and they are an art history class. They would like a formal tour of The Great American Thing, with a question and answer period, plus time to roam around on their own. They are scheduled to be at Tacoma Art Museum for an hour and a half.

Barbara Abegg is scheduled to docent on that day, but I would like to find a second docent for the tour so that it can be split into two smaller groups.

Please reply only if you are available, and I will confirm whether or not you are needed.

Thanks for your time!

Art fabrication article from NYT

"We're in a post-Conceptual era where it's really the artist's idea and vision that are prized, rather than the ability to master the crafts that support the work," said Jeffrey Deitch, whose SoHo gallery specializes in large-scale productions by contemporary artists. "Today our understanding of an artist is closer to a philosopher than to a craftsman."
