Western Bridge

Hi Everyone,

Last night I went to
Western Bridge, the new exhibition space in SoDo in Seattle recently opened to show the collection of Bill and Ruth True. It’s a really incredible experience. The gallery space was designed by artist/architect Roy McMakin and the current exhibition shows contemporary art (with an emphasis on video) that is rarely seen elsewhere in Seattle. The Trues were recently included in the ArtNews list of the top 200 collectors in the world.

The space is FREE and open to the public on Thursdays through Saturdays, from 12-6. The address is
3412 Fourth Avenue South in Seattle, behind the Gull Oil Building (on the same lot), just north of the West Seattle Bridge. I really encourage you to go! The Trues spoke last night at the event I attended about how important it is to them to share their collection with the community.

I have some cards from them that include a map and a description of the space on the back. I’ll post them on the bulletin board at the volunteer desk.

Dinner on the 19th

We have two reservations at the Pike Brewry. The first is for 6:00 p.m. under Tara Young. The second is at 6:15 under Penny Hulse. This gives some of us a few more minutes to enjoy the art.

There is a requirement for groups of eight to pay in one check...and the grituity is added automatically - so this means we must all bring cash to pay for our meals....since they will not want to process multiple cards for the dinners.

IF we had made the reservation for 16 we would have been restricted to their buffet menu....and we thought you all would prefer to order off the regular menu...please come prepared to pay in cash so that this works smoothly.

Thank you, you willing Docent Event Committee.

Hello Fellow Docents

By now, you should know Third Thursday is TAM Docents Coffee Day.

It's third Thursday time again ... we are meeting for the

Museum of Glass is showing:

The days are longer ... the sun is out (work on your tan!) ... it'll

Tacoma Art Listserv info

Hello everyone:

I recently subscribed to a listserv put on by local Tacomans interested in the arts and hosted by the City of Tacoma. I have received about 4 or 5 emails a day from it, so it is not overwhelming (yet!). If you would like to subscribe, send an email to TacomaArt-request@cityoftacoma.org and put Subscribe in the subject line.

The emails cover things like announcements of local art events, art classes, calls to artists, studio space for rent, etc. I got a couple today regarding events at this Thursday's Art Walk which sound fun.

RE: biennial reminder

I know it’s especially tempting with this piece, because it’s hard for visitors to see the milk. I think the issue is that we don’t want to suggest to visitors that it is okay to interact with a work in the galleries in this way. Once visitors think it’s okay to interact with one work, they can easily assume that it’s okay with others. The exception to this would be if there is an explicit invitation to touch/interact, as with the wig piece.

Thanks

I admit that I am a 'blower of milk'. I find this is the only way, without touching the piece, that I can show people what I mean when I say "this piece uses milk as a projection screen". People looking at the piece assume they are looking at a piece of white glass, but are surprised to see the surface ripple when gently blown upon. Are we forbidden to blow hard enough to create a splash or is it something to do with germs? Just curious.

Hello everyone,

We have been reminded by Visitor Services that we should not blow on the milk in the Juniper Shuey work in the Biennial, and we should remind visitors about this as well.

Thanks for your cooperation.
