Hello docents:

Here’s one last email before I depart for two weeks of holiday vacation. (The trusty Megan Ristine is here should you have any questions or concerns before my return on January 9.) First, a couple reminders; then, the upcoming shift schedule.

We now have a schedule of advertised public group tours for the Warhol exhibition. Thank you again for being willing to offer them during your shifts. As we know they may or may not get any takers, so please do your best not to get your hopes up too much, yet still to be prepared. Here are all the confirmed, upcoming ones. Curator Lecture: Best of the Northwest Revisited

Curator Margaret Bullock shares some of the finest examples of paintings by Northwest artists from Tacoma Art Museum’s collection in Best of the Northwest: Selected Paintings from the Collection. Come hear her discuss the exhibition, including a second rotation of works on view since November. Free for docents. (This is also a public program.)

As we unveil the second rotation of artwork in the exhibition, come hear from the artist as he presents an overview of his work and artistic approach, and shares stories about the works on view. This program is free for docents as a required training.

Guiding visitors through Michael Kenna’s concentration camp photographs
Rabbi Bruce Kadden of Temple Beth El will join us to discuss some difficult, stark, emotional imagery in the new Kenna rotation, and to share his experience in recent travels with his wife to concentration camps in Poland (Auschwitz and Maidanek) and the Czech Republic (Terezin). We will also welcome you all to share any relevant experiences and/or any questions or thoughts on approaching this art with visitors.

And a curatorial heads-up: There will be several small artwork rotations early in the new year. First, Howard Kottler will leave the lobby cases to make way for glass artwork by various artists from our collection. Curatorial expects to do this in two rounds, one starting on January 15 and the next starting on January 22, to be fully completed and “open” on January 25. The week after that they will change out some of the jewelry in the Davis Gallery cases, to be complete on February 1. And the week after that they expect to rotate in a new round of prints in the Murray Event Space (new theme TBD). As soon as I have label text and/or checklists for any of these changes, I will pass them your way!

Finally, below is the calendar through the end of January. Please let me know if you can cover any of the open shifts. You’ll also notice that one of those shifts is this evening, for Third Thursday—if you’d like to cover that one, feel free to let me know or just come by! J
