RE: Docents: Upcoming trainings

PS: If you are unable to attend the training on Nov 14, this is one of those rare cases where we have a second option:

Alternate
Training Date:

Saturday,

November 3, 2 pm

Adorning the Dome Public Lecture / Warhol Opening

If you cannot attend Amy’s special docent training for us on the 14th, you may attend her public lecture on the 3rd instead. Let me know if you are planning to do this so that we may reserve tickets for you, as we expect a large audience.

The format will not be exactly the same for both programs, but content will be similar.

Hello fabulous docents:

Attached is the almost-completely updated training calendar through the end of 2012, including reference lists for the Michael Kenna and Andy Warhol exhibitions (Kenna is now open and is beautiful!).

I’m pasting the upcoming trainings here, too. Next Wednesday will be a fun, hands-on experience! Since many volunteers will be here for the potluck, I am going to open this training up to other volunteers who may be interested in learning about tapetes. Please RSVP for both the training and the potluck on the 24th, so that we can appropriately set up for these events.

Required Training

Wednesday,

October 24,

10:30 am-12 pm

Día de los Muertos Tapete Workshop

Join Courtney in the Open Art Studio for a special hands-on workshop as we make our own tapetes, or sand paintings, using the same traditional materials and techniques used by the museum’s annual tapete artist, Fulgencio Lazo! Learn about traditional celebrations of Day of the Dead. Afterward, stay at the museum for the volunteer potluck.

For Fun!

Wednesday,

October 24,

12-2 pm

Volunteer Potluck

If you plan to come, please RSVP to Megan at MRistine@TacomaArtMuseum.org or 253.272.4258 x3026.

Required Training

Wednesday,

November 14,

10:30 am-12 pm

Adorning the Dome

Amy McBride, City of Tacoma Arts Administrator, will share with us the story of the 1982 Tacoma Dome public art competition that resulted in Warhol’s iconic flower design submission. She will also discuss current, renewed efforts to see Warhol’s proposal brought to life on the dome.

Required Training

Wednesday,

November 28,

11 am-12:30 pm

Curator Lecture: Andy Warhol’s Flowers for Tacoma

After hearing from Amy about Warhol’s Tacoma Dome design, Rock will round out our training with an overview of the Warhol exhibition. This lecture will also be a public program (free for docents). Note that it has a slightly later start than usual (11 am)—and that it will be in the Classroom, not Event Space.

You’ll also notice I am working on a field trip for our only December training, early in the month. More on that as soon as I can confirm it!

I wanted to note a couple other things, just so you are aware: 1) The Chihuly floats have now been deinstalled from the wave for the winter season. 2) The museum will close at 1 pm this Saturday for Gala prep.

Hope you are doing well, and looking forward to sculpting and painting sand with you next week!

Thanks as always for all you do,

Courtney
