Greetings all:
We’ve had some change (and therefore confusion) with the title of the wonderful glass now installed in the stone garden. Pasted below is the final text for our labels.
The title is “Ma Chihuly’s Floats” and the installation itself, reflected in this title, is dedicated to the memory of the artist’s mother. She passed away this week.
Dale Chihuly (United States, born 1941)
Ma Chihuly’s Floats, 2006
Blown glass
Collection of the artist, installed in memory of Viola Chihuly
A Tacoma native and internationally acclaimed artist, Dale Chihuly began his Niijima floats series in 1991. He brings them home to Tacoma in this installation, which is adjacent to Tacoma Art Museum’s permanent display of its premiere Chihuly collection.
The stone sculpture at the center of the museum is in the form of a wave. It was created by Seattle-based artist Richard Rhodes. Forty of Chihuly’s Niijima floats—balls of glass resembling glass spheres used on Japanese fishing nets—are placed on this metaphorical stone wave. Niijima is the name of the island in Japan where Chihuly began this series. The artist explained the creation of the floats, saying: “It is interesting that the most difficult series I have ever blown are the floats, considering the sphere is the easiest form to make in glass. It’s the most natural form you could blow. But it’s not natural at this scale. ”
