TAM: Anne Appleby label

Here is the label text for the Anne Appleby painting that will replace the Mark Tobey in the front entrance stairwell.

Anne Appleby

Early Rose, 2005

Oil and wax on canvas

Tacoma Art Museum, Gift of Rebecca and Alexander Stewart

Anne Appleby’s paintings reward careful looking. At first glance they are minimal: each panel a single color arranged with others in a grid pattern. Their surfaces, however, are complex and textured, built up with layer upon layer of subtly varied tones.

Appleby’s works evoke the slow but steady shifts of natural cycles. Each painting traces the seasonal history of a specific plant, here an early rose. She has compared her work to “the time-lapse films in which plants break through the ground”, where each small change is documented in slow motion then combined into a single, fluid transformation.
